In the third episode of the IC101 Master Class, Jill reviews what should happen at your first appointment. From discussing your symptoms to urine testing, your doctor will usually begin by testing your urine for UTI and STI. They will look for visible or microscopic blood in your urine and, if necessary, rule out bladder cancer. The most important part of the diagnostic appointment is a pelvic floor muscle assessment to look for tight muscles along with tenderness if your bladder and other structures internally. A cystoscopy allows the doctor to look directly at your bladder in a fairly quick and easy examination though this is usually not done at the first appointment. Jill also discusses the use of hydrodistention with cystoscopy which will allow a doctor to look even more closely at the bladder. This test is only done if the diagnosis is in doubt.
