(Update May 2015 – The Parson’s IC Solution is now known as Hep-Lido-A and is exclusively available only through Imprimis Pharmaceuticals. It is no longer available through University Compounding.)

The IC Network is delighted to announce that a new, prepackaged bladder instillation is now available in the USA. Named after its inventor, C. Lowell Parsons MD (UCSD), the Parson’s Therapeutic Solution uses buffered lidocaine and heparin to immediately relieve the symptoms of urinary urgency, frequency and pain associated with interstitial cystitis and can last for up to 12 hours. Dr. Parsons is best known for inventing the FDA approved oral medication, Elmiron, and the development of the diagnostic PUF Questionnaire. In his clinic at UC San Diego, he has treated more than 7000 patients making him one of the most experienced clinicians in the world. Dr. Parsons is also conducting vital research into the potential cause of IC.

About Heparin Instillations

universitycompoundinglogo2Rescue and heparin instillations fall under “Step Two” of the AUA Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Interstitial Cystitis. Heparin promotes the barrier function of the bladder epithelium, preventing the leak of urine toxins into the bladder wall and lidocaine acts to anesthetize bladder nerve resulting in the downregulation of bladder sensory nerves for up to 12 hours. Over the years, a variety of formulas have been used, many customized by individual practitioners. With the Parson’s IC Solution, Dr. Parsons offers the first standardized, clinically proven formula that can be used by clinicians and by patients who are doing home installations. Review The Treatment Protocol Here! This formula:

  • Gives instant relief for most patients if used during flare ups.
  • Reduces the risk of errors made when patients (or providers) mix solutions.
  • Is easier for patients who are self-administering at home.
  • Can be shipped to clinicians in 42 states.
  • Is affordable and routinely covered by most health insurance carriers.
  • University Compounding will bill your insurance for you.

Solid Research Results

In 2011, Dr. Parsons published the results of a successful randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial conducted at four sites in the USA. Twenty eight patients were enrolled in the study with eighteen completing the trial with no protocol violations. Pain levels were reduced 42% over a period of 12 hours, with 21% for controls. Bladder symptoms improved 50% vs 13% vs. the control group. No serious adverse events were attributed to the medication. Parsons CL, et al.
