    Symptoms awful when sleeping !!

    Advertisement :
I feel like I have been dealing with this on and off for years .. Mostly on . I did have frequent urination . But my biggest issue is at nite or during the day if I nap .. No matter how often I wake I feel the pressure and pain in my bladder .. If I get up to go sometimes I pee a little sometimes a lot .. But then I'm fine until I wake again it could be a hour later or 4 hours that same pressure and pain in bladder .. I feel it has gotten worse with menopause I am officially in as of this year . 52 years old .. It's just So uncomfortable to go to bed !! I guess I just do not notice it as much when I'm up and working during the day .. Unfortunately .. I have not tried the Ic diet yet .. I must go to urologist . I have had two sick siblings that I have been trying to help . Take to doc appts Etc .. And keeping my 84 year old Mom busy and watching my one year old grandson .. I do not have vaginal pain or burning but I do have frequent itching .. Does anyone else think their ic gets worse with menopause and also think symptoms are worse when laying down .. Sleeping ? Thanks all !!

My symptoms are exactly the same! I am post menopausal (9) years.
The past 6 months have been the worst. When I lay down and I have to sleep on my back due to spinal issues from cervical to sacral, I have pressure to pee. Doesn't matter what happened during the day as far as frequency or pressure. The night stinks. Even laying for a nap- instant pressure. I go every 1.5 hours.
Because I have lower back issues, I tend to blame it on that.
I had surgery on my forehead this week to remove basal cell carcinoma and they prescribed Vicodin. I do not do well with pain killers but had to take them due to the extreme head pain. What was nice last night is that the pain killer worked so well that I actually slept for 6.5 hours in a row and that has almost never happened even on a good night. So it was interesting how that stopped the urge to go.
Do you have any theories as to your reason you go when laying down? It's the worst symptoms for me because it's sleep robbing.

I used to have the exact same symptoms...constant pain/pressure within minutes of peeing. Fortunately, I have it all under control now with medication and the IC diet. Anyway, I think nights can be worse because there are no distractions to keep you from thinking about your bladder. Sometimes just thinking about it can make matters worse. It also might be a function of your position when you lay down. Have you tried sleeping in different positions to see if that helps? I know that laying on my back can make me feel like I have to pee, and I do not have that feeling when I lay on my side. I am the same age as you, and I do think the hormonal changes associated with menopause can make IC worse. I still take low dose birth control pills, and my bladder feels better because of it. I suggest you see a doctor as soon as you can so you can get help. My personal opinion is that a urogynecologist is the best bet, as he or she can help with both issues (IC and menopause). And I would really urge you to start the IC diet as soon as possible. That change alone can sometimes make a big difference. Hope you feel better!

I'm also post menopausal (10 years), I was only diagnosed with IC 1.5 years ago. I also had that pressure when lying down that makes it impossible to think about anything else..I used to go to sleep with a coldpak on my bladder, I tried a heat pad too, but the cold pak felt better..maybe it just numbed the sensation. I didn't have vaginal pain or burning either, but I had itching also. The diet was the critical thing that eventually eased my symptoms to the point of feeling normal most of the time, even when in bed, my urinating is back to normal from having to go every half hour or so. I kept a food journal so I might pinpoint my triggers, over time the discomfort gradually eased. I know different approaches help different people and we all seem to have to find what works for each of us, but I think if you haven't tried the diet yet, it would probably help. You seem to have a lot going on in your life that can be stressful. Stress is a biggie for me also, when I was diagnosed one of my siblings was dying of cancer, my ageing parents needed a lot of care, my marriage was falling apart etc. etc. I hope you can get relief soon!

Yeah... that nighttime pressure and discomfort is, nine times out of ten, related to something that you've eaten and drunk that day that irritated your bladder! You must try the IC diet.. and not just for a week... do it for several months to give your bladder time to heal! Hugs and welcome!

I totally agree that diet is extremely important. I know it can be a challenge, but it's easier for me if I plan meals ahead --- that way I only have to think about it once a week before I do my grocery shopping.

    Sending encouragement,

I am 56 and in perimenopause (only 4 months no period). Sleeping is the pits for me. The pain is worse then. Due to pain keeping me up I was prescribed on Friday Uribel when needed. I am only taking it at night and I only sleep 3 to 4 hours. I have to sleep on my back so I don’t put any pressure on my bladder. During the day the symptoms aren’t so bad. I have started the IC diet and have some relief. I am so tired. Last night I slept a little better and slept on my side. I hope you find help soon! ((hugs))

Dawn, this thread is about a year old..but hopefully others will reply... I am so sorry about your brother..Stress is a big trigger for me.. Nights , I have to get up many times.. I have no idea what it is like to sleep more then 2 hours at a time.. Good that you are to see a urologist..You could have an infection or it could be IC..I have had IC for 14 years.. I know certain foods bother me.. but still have flares that last a long time.. It is a puzzle to me even after all these years. I am very sensitive to meds. The over active bladder meds..do very little and they constipate me.. I can't take them.. I have tried many things.. Right now am using A natural path product called Usnea.. and Bell Product #31.. 3 weeks ago I ..started a med for Diabetes.. I see my Dr this morn..I am a thin person and Dr says it is harder to treat in thin people. UGh.

Hope you get things sorted and feel better.. and once again 'hugs' to you in the loss of your brother..

I'm so sorry you lost your brother. It's not surprising that your stress level is high right now. I suggest you talk with your doctor about taking something to help you relax during this time. I lost my brother some time ago and I do understand. It will get better in time. I wish I could give you a hug in person.
