Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death among men in the United States. Prostate cancer usually grows very slowly. There is no standard screening test for prostate cancer. Physicians usually perform a digital rectal exam of the prostate to look for lumps or any other abnormalities. A simple blood test can also screen for the Prostate-specific antigen test (PSA). PSA is made by the prostate and is usually increased in patients with cancer, as well as infection or inflammation. They can also screen for a prostate cancer gene (PCA3). Seven types of treatments are used, including watchful waiting, surgery, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, chemotherapy, biologic therapy and biophosphonate therapy.
