Can you take vitamins? Do they bother your IC? Share your experience!

This survey was conducted from January 2000 to April 2000. Please note that these responses are only opinion. The use of vitamins is difficult for many IC patients. Their use is a personal decision based upon your own unique tolerances. Any brand endorsements represent the opinion of the respondent only. It should not be considered medical advice.

I am able to take ulti-vitamins and Ester-C, as well a good handful of other supplements. I take 3 Prelief w/ any vitamin containing C. - Beth

------------------------------------------------

B12 causes me flares. I find that a children's multivitiam is better for me than others. I have also found that the closer to nature it is, the easier I can tolerate it. I often take B6 for upset stomach & have found that those derviced for brown rice I tolerate better than synthetic. I know that I have problems with Natrue Made brand vitiams in general. I doubt they are nature made.

-----------------------------------------------

I have a lot of trouble with my IC and I am a vegetarian so I finally found a vitamin that doesn't seem to bother me It is called Vegetarian Multiple by Schiff. I haven't noticed any specific problems from it and you can even take it if your not a Vegetarian. I take 2000mg everyday of powdered, buffered, non acidic Vitamin C. I have used both Twinlab and NOW brands with no problems. I feel the Vitamin C keeps my symptoms under control. I initially started taking it to help with allergies, which are now gone.

------------------------------------------------

Nature's Plus adult chewable multi vitamin & mineral supplement. I know there are some ingredients that should irritate, but it does'nt and other supplements have. I've been taking them about 9 months.

--------------------------------------------------

I have never found vitamins to flair my IC but I would recommend that ICer's take non acidic vitamin C.

----------------------------------------------------

I take the following vitamins daily. They have really improved IC symptoms.

Vitamin World Ester C 1000mg
Vitamin World Magnesium 250mg
Vitamin World E-400 I.U. (I started out with E-200 I.U.)
Sundown A-8,000 I.U.
Vitamin World B-6 25mg*
Nature's Life Beta Carotine 5,000 I.U.*
Tums Calcium 1000mg (5 Tablets)

*I cut these vitamins in half. I buy B-6 in 50mg and Beta Carotene in 10,000 I.U.

Vitamin c flares me every time. Not sure why but every time dr. adds to my diet vitamin c I have a flare

--------------------------------------------------

IC is not severe but I do have days I am fairly uncomfortable. I am on Oxycontin for chronic kidney pain and I am sure that helps the IC. I recently started taking Centrum (regular). It does not seem to bother me but I needed something for my lack of energy and lousy diet. It seems to have helped my energy and immune system both.

--------------------------------------------------

Yes. The only vitamins I can safely take are Vitamin E and B6. The brand I use is Sundown. I've found that I can take Flintstone's vitamins (2) a day and it doesn't seem to bother me. My gyno said it was ok. Mitzi

I have found 2 items to be great help. 1 of them is called superfood you can call '1 800 herb doc' and they will send you any information, ask for the newsletters as well they are such good reading. this supplement tastes so creamy in soy milk. it is a great way to start the day if you cant face food and it helps with cravings so much. It has helped me to lose a bit of weight as well. it is all good things form spirulina, seaweed, beets and spinach, AND IT IS 100% ORGANIC. there is nothing like it ANYWHERE. iT CAN LAST YOU 1-2 MONTHS DEPENDS HOW MUCH you take. the other product is organic flax oil made by Barlean. should be in most health shops. the amount of essential fatty acids are more than any other food on the planet. you can use it on salads or just take a spoonful. The essentail fatty acids help so much with inflammation as well as helping metabolisim wtc,..

--------------------------------------------------

I so far can't take any vitamins and would like to and feel I need to, to be stronger. I will look into this survey and hopefuly see a brand that works for IC patients. I have asked this question before and on the chat line and found no one recommended anything except for someone selling them! Thanks for the survey. Hope it comes up with something!

Vitamins bothered me before I even knew I had IC. I took a B complex to test myself after dx & boy did it kill me! I wish i could find a multivitamin that wouldn't flare me. Kathi

Since I first was diagnosed with IC, I have been taking TNT by Great Earth. It is a multi-vitamin multi-mineral supplement, and I have never

--------------------------------------------------

Walgreen's Multiple Vitamins One Daily for Adults and children dietary Supplement

--------------------------------------------------

Yes, multiple vitamins have irritated my bladder; specifically, Your Life Multiple Vitamin and Mineral tablet, and Shakley Mutliple Vitamin and Mineral. I now take the following Solgar products - Vitamin A softgels, dry Beta Carotene, P-5-P (form of B6), PABA, Gentle Iron. I also take Country Life Buffered Vitamin C. I had been taking Vitamin E (dry) but stopped when I learned that Vitamin E is a blood thinner. Since I am taking Elmiron, this did not seem like a wise thing to do.

It seems as if my ic started not long after I began taking the liquid colloidal vitamin/mineral suppplement called Virgin Earth Ultimate.I quit taking it but the IC has been with me for 3 long years.

i cannot tolerate vitamins and i have to be very careful w/ my diet and know that my body is not getting the nutrients that it needs. recently, i tried taking msm--in powder form and it really hurt me. i've about given up on vitamins.

I used Prenatal vitamins during pregnancy and tolerated them well. I needed vitamins recently and found that they are less irritating than over the counter vitamins. I asked my Ob-Gyn to prescribe them so I wouldn't have to pay so much for them. I sometimes feel that I need extra iron, but taking them causes some minor discomfort.

--------------------------------------------------

Vitamin C and vitamin B-6, even when in "natural, no additives" pills have caused me problems. Alfalfa is a perfect way to get vitamin c and it won't upset IC Symptoms. Take acid free vitamin C. Since O dont eat fruit or drink juices it gives me my vitamin c. Get it at your health store. "total health, esterified-acid free."

--------------------------------------------------

Yes. There is no vitamin supplement I can ever take without getting a big flare, including ones that are supposed to be made for people with IC. The same goes for herbs including herbal teas.

--------------------------------------------------

Dr. Fred Kuyt. He treated me ten years ago and I was pain free for nine of them. I did everything he told me to and within about a year of treatment I was able to eat and drink almost anything I wanted. He is a master in his field.
