Medical Education and CME, CNE & CEU Opportunities
These are superb educational articles for care providers. Available in PDF format, slides, powerpoint or audio presentation, they provide up to date overviews of IC. We suggest that patients carry atleast one of these with them to their medical care provider appointments in case you encounter someone who does not know what IC is.

Homma Y, Ueda T, Ito T, Takei M, Tomoe H. Japanese guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of interstitial cystitis. International Journal of Urology (2009) 16, 4-16.
The Scoeity of Interstitial Cystitis Japan has made a remarkable contribution to the IC movement with the publication of their guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of IC. It is, by far, one of the best articles we've reviewed and its discussion of the epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of IC is impressive, citing 220 supporting references. For clinicans who want to make decisions based upon evidence based medicine, this is THE document to begin with though the citations do stop with the year 2005. Beautifully written, concise summaries and easy to read.

Terminology of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms. Helpful or Confusing? Vishwajit S, Andersson K. Special Issue: Update on Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms TheScientificWorldJournal (2009) 9, 17-22
How can a physician and patient clearly communicate if they don't understand what various terms mean? A recenl study found that only 44% of patients knew the correct definition of increased daytime frequency and nocturia. More than 20% were unsure of the meaning of terms that their physician used and less than 50% understood the current definition of various terms. This fascinating text seeks to clarify the confusion that exists in both patients and physicians including: LUTS, Urgency, Frequency, Nocturia, OAB and Detrustor Overactivity. (Dec. 2008)

Diagnosis & Management of IC/Painful Bladder Syndrome
Faculty: Forrest J, Mishell D, Butrick C, Evans R, Nickel JC, Shulman L, Smith D, Stanford E, WhitmoreK
This is, easily, our favorite article (originally a CME) for educating medical care providers about IC, it's physiological origins, diagnosis and treatments. We especially like the treatment protocols listed. This is also a perfect resource for educating others! (2006)

A note from ICN Founder Jill Osborne - When I started my first support group in 1993, I always believed that I should do more than just provide support. I felt that we needed to look at our community and physician needs. As I spent more time with medical professionals, their needs became clear. We needed good, quality, events and CME's that would raise the knowledge of medical professionals, particularly at the community level. Local physicians simply don't have the time or budgets to travel to multiple national conferences each year. We also needed solid patient education materials that would empower patients to take charge of their care. They needed to build their confidence and move the patient from passiveness to active and healthy behaviors. The ICN embodies my belief!
