May 15, 1998: Transitions at the ICA

The US-ICA recently announced to its group leaders that their long time Executive Director, Debra Slade, had resigned to pursue other interests. This represents a significant transition for the IC community in the United States. As the key ICA representative in legislative hearings, Debra Slade was well suited and accomplished in her position and we, as IC patients throughout the USA, benefited from her work and wisdom. In whatever she chooses to do in the future, we hope that she knows that we respected her work and substantial contribution to the IC community.

It leaves open the question of what new changes will we see at the ICA in the next year and under the stewardship of a new leader. As a former ICA group leader, I hope that the ICA will add to its priority list the development of small, regional or local events that focus on patient morale, support group development and local physician education. To do so, the ICA may need to empower more if its volunteers and leaders via its five year strategic planning process.

As the heartbeat of the ICA's support goals, those who serve as volunteers at the state or group leader level have energy and enthusiasm to contribute to this organization. Help them develop consistent, quality programming at the support group level that will support and sustain local fund raising drives. There is the chance that with more local and regional activities, that local corporate fundraising could completely sustain the costs of local activities AND support groups, thus leaving more national funds for research. A little empowerment can truly go a long way.

Best wishes in your new change and may your next Executive Director shine in his or her own right! - Jill, ICN Manager.
