March 20, 1999: Safety Awareness for women

Yesterday, in California, we had devastating news. Three women, one of whom had graduated from high school with my sister, had disappeared on a sightseeing trip to Yosemite. For four weeks, our community clung to a desperate hope that they would be found alive. Two days ago, disaster struck when the burned remains of their car was found. The FBI confirmed that two bodies were found in the trunk, burned beyond recognition.

Though we may never know why this has happened, we must understand that every woman and every family should try to be wise and cautious in our travels. The National Crime Prevention Council offers an extensive web site of personal safety tips and information, including:

As we mourn their loss, we encourage you to be active and prepared in your personal lives. Women are uniquely vulnerable to violent crime. This Spring, take some action to protect those in your families. Look for self defense class and then invite every person that you care for you to attend with you. Make a weekend of it and you could, by chance, save the life of someone you care for. There has never been a better time than today, in the face of the tragedy of these women, for you to learn new safety awareness skills.
