Marketing opportunities expand for Bioniche Life Sciences' Cystistat®

- Company Receives Approval for Expanded Indications in Canada - London, Ontario, May 10, 2000 -

Bioniche Life Sciences, Inc, (BNC: TSE), a fully integrated Canadian biopharmaceutical company serving both the human and veterinary markets, today announced that the Company has received approval to expand the indications in Canada for one of its lead products, Cystistat®. Cystistat is Bioniche's patented treatment for Interstitial Cystitis (IC), a painful, debilitating bladder condition. Interstitial Cystitis afflicts approximately 1.5 million people worldwide. A hyaluronic-acid derivative product, Cystistat is instilled directly into the bladder where it helps to restore the glycosaminoglycan (GAG) layer.

Cystistat is manufactured at the Company's FDA/ISO 9001 approved facility in Ireland and is currently approved for distribution in Canada and Europe. The other indications now include radiation cystitis and cystitis caused by infections, trauma, urolithiasis, urinary retention, and neoplasia. Dr. Vincent A. Salvatori, Senior Vice President, Clinical Operations adds, "these additional indications are important milestones in our clinical development program for Cystistat, in conjunction with our on-going efforts to secure a U.S. registration. " "The increased market potential afforded by the expansion of the indications beyond IC is tremendous," stated Graeme McRae, President & CEO of Bioniche Life Sciences.

"Cystistat is an innovative treatment now available for wider therapeutic use, with opportunities to significantly increase product revenues for Bioniche." In Canada, Cystistat is marketed by Paladin Labs Inc. of Montreal, Quebec. "This expansion of the indication to include all forms of cystitis provides broader marketing opportunities for Cystistat and represents an important new alternative therapy for urologists," stated Jonathan Goodman, Paladin's President & CEO.

"Moving forward, we can expect increased demand for this product." In addition to Paladin's efforts in Canada, licensing and distribution agreements are in place throughout Europe including the UK, Scandinavia, Austria and Spain. Distribution agreements are also being negotiated in Italy, Germany, Greece and China.
