Bladder Training & Holding Protocol

IC patients who have found some relief from pain via other treatments may be able to reduce their frequency by using a bladder training technique called "Bladder Holding Protocol." Methods vary, but basically the patient decides to void at designated times and use relaxation techniques and distractions to help keep to the schedule.

Gradually, the patient tries to lengthen the time between the scheduled voids. The aim is to stretch the bladder little by little, until it is able to hold more urine comfortably. A diary of voids is usually helpful in keeping track of progress. This is not indicated for patients who are in pain and should be tried only after the pain is under control.

Paul Kaprowski, of UCSD, has written and spoken extensively about Bladder Holding Protocol. He has a transcripts available through the ICIC and ICA for purchase. Please remember that this technique should be used only after pain management is firmly in place.
