Selecting A Physician
The most frequent question that we receive on the IC Network is how to locate
medical care providers who are compassionate and knowledgable about IC.
Given the fact that IC is only relatively newly accepted and of interest
to the highly specialized urology medical community, there is a large population
of medical care providers who are simply unaware of the disease, particularly
primary care physicians, emergency room physicians, family practice physicians
and, of course, internists. How do we find a care provider who is knowledgeable
about IC?
There are several resources on-line that can help you locate a urologist.
- The ICN
Physician Listings is a small but growing list of physicians around
the country who have an interest in treating IC and pain patients.
- The NIDDK
IC Research Centers show the clinics who accept IC patients in the
latest IC research studies. If you qualify for research studies (i.e.
NIDDK diagnostic criteria), you could participate in a national study.
If you don't, they still may have an interest in treating you. It's
worth asking about!
- The ICA Physician's Registry is
available by mail from that organization. Simply send a request for
the state you are in and they will forward their list of physicians
and clinics to you.
- The AMA Doctor Finder is an
on-line resource of the American Medical Association and allows you
to sort by specialty and zip code. This is an ideal way to research
the general urology professionals in your area. We encourage you to
then contact those clinics and ask if they treat IC patients.
- The
Urology Channels MD Locator Service is a searchable database of
urologists throughout the USA.
- The ICN Research Library
offers an extensive archive of physicians who have published studies
on IC and often have active IC practices. You'll have the chance to
pull names. You can then use the AMA physician resource to find their
clinic and location.

Did you know that there are resources on the web that allow you to research
a physicians, their licenses and specialties. www.docboard.org
is a comprehensive web site created by the Association of State Medical
Board Executive Directors. It's well worth visiting.
