doxycycline trtmnt is kicking my booty
gee, it really makes me feel like crud. dh is feeling crummy too, but i've got it worse because i'm a lot smaller. talked to the nurse today and she said to eat about an hour before i take it. that's the closest to it i can get with food. so we'll start changing our habits tomorrow morning. ugh.
but it hasn't caused a flare. so that's a good sign i think. whew. still have some bladder pain despite the oxytrol patch, and some leaking, but it's not as often as last week.
even sparred tonight and got kicked a good one right above the pubic bone. thought i would DIE. :yikes: but no incontinence. what a relief! still hurt though. think a heating pad might be called for tonight. i really need to work on my blocks better i guess.
well, that's my update. only 3 weeks and 2 days left.

moby,
my doc has me and dh on doxycycline for 14 days. then i take it for another 14 days. he also has me using a vaginal cream twice during the first 2 weeks to kill any vaginal bacteria. no sex unless we use condoms for at least a month.
he said that in the study, when the women who didn't have improvement were questioned more, they found out that many of them had partners that wouldn't do the treatment.
so you might want to try it again if you're not noticing it working.
i'm sticking with the oxytrol patch for a few more weeks because i'm afraid to stop it now. but after i finish the doxycycline, then i'll take the patch off and see what happens.
they said if you take the pills with food or milk, it would affect how much of it is absorbed.
hope this helps.

I did the Doxycycline treatment. This treatment requires you to take 100mg Doxycycline twice a day for 14 days and then once a day for 14 more days. In addition, yeast control measures should be followed. Your spouse or partner also must be treated with Doxycycline at the same time but they only need to take it for 14 days.
Some say you can take Doxy with food, others say a small snack is ok. My understanding is you need to avoid antacids and vitamin supplements that contain calcium, iron, magnesium, or sodium bicarbonate because they may decrease the effectiveness of doxycycline. If you do take these supplements, you should take them an hour before or 2 hours after taking the Doxy. Prelief, Tums and baking soda fall in this category so you have to be careful if you use them while taking the Doxy. I would imagine the controversy about whether or not to take it with food might be because these minerals are contained in many foods.
I had some improvement from this treatment but it did not put me into remission. I wonder if a couple more weeks of treatment might have been of benefit. Hope it completely does the job for you. Good luck!

quick update
took the doxy about an hour after breakfast today (yes, i finally ate breakfast for the first time in YEARS). no nausea.
dh did the same, and he feels good too. yesterday was so bad for him, he had to leave work early. i almost did, but i would have had to find a sub for my kids, and that sucks more than staying at work in pain.
still having a TON of pain today, but i think it's from the sparring last night. i guess my bladder just went into fits when it got smacked. :yikes:

If you're taking the doxycycline it's best to have a small meal/snack before taking it. It won't hurt, just stay away from milk or antacids for a couple hours after taking. I have met many people who took the doxy on an empty stomach and suffered terribly for about 2 hours afterwards (extreme nausea and all over YUCK feeling). My urologist told me to take it with food. I pulled the following off the CDC website for you all...
Take doxycycline with food and least one full glass of water. Avoid taking antacids (like Tums or Maalox), cholestyramine (Questran), colestipol (Colestid), dairy products (like milk or yogurt) or vitamins 3 hours before or after taking doxycycline.
I hope this helps. Debi
