Does Prozac irritate your bladder?

I am prescribed 20mg Prozac a day for my depression. I took it for two days. It irritated my bladder a little bit. Does this happen to you as well?

Yes

I have yet to find an antidepressant that does not irritate my bladder. My doctor prescribes them for sleep, but I can't tolerate them. The only one I haven't tried yet is Wellbutrin.

I take Lexapro and it actually helps my bladder. I wasn't expecting that at all - but it's been a nice unexpected side effect.

Current IC meds: Elmiron (since 2001), Levaquin (one pill after intercourse to prevent UTIs), Lexapro (since 2003 for depression & anxiety, but also helps my IC)

Past IC meds: Amitriptyline (Elavil), Hydroxyzine (Vistaril), Detrol LA (They all helped, but I was able to discontinue them.)

My IC story: http://www.ic-network.com/patientstories/kim.html It's very outdated now. I've been virtually symptom free and able to eat & drink whatever I'd like for several years now.

I take 20 mg of Prozac twice a day, and my pain is sooooo much better on it! Everyone is so different though. I did take Wellbutrin at one time, and I think it may have been the trigger for my IC to start (symptoms began two days later), so I stay away from that one completely, but Prozac has been a Godsend!

Yes, Prozac irritated my bladder. Effexor was another bad one for my IC.

Wellbutrin worked great for me. But usually it's a process of trial and error to find the right pill that helps depression but doesn't hurt IC.

Hi
Prozac hasnt bothered my bladder. I am no expert but before you give up on the drug, see if other things are going on, like where you are in menstral cycle, what have you eaten. Sometimes I think some of us dont take this into consideration, and we assume right away something new is the culprit. When I ovulate I know its flare up time for me. So you might want to hang in there,we are all different-JOJO Good Luck

Certain it's the Antidepressants

You're right, of course, JoJo that it could be many things. I can skip my antidepressant just one night and have the pain go away, or be okay on it and increase my dose and have a flareup. I've watched the pattern for years and I'm sure that's it. No menstrual cycles, so it's not that. I have learned from posts on another part of this site that antihistimines help, and they certainly allow me to tolerate the antidepressant I need to help me sleep. I guess it only works if you have "mast cells," and that must be my case because benadryl works for me.

Oh, JoJo, I wasn't offended. I come here looking for suggestions, and I also hope that some of the ones I make help others. So far I've gotten a lot of help here.

Haven't tried Prozac lately but Effexor, the tricyclics and the pink tablet of Celexa (but not the white tablets) irritate my bladder horribly.

Blessings, Lori
