Question He's given me Macrodantin...

Hi all,

Thanks for those that replied to my last post. Just quickly, my dr has given me Macrodantin 100mg to be taken at night- I read the list of side effects and they freaked me out although I realise in a small dose the side effects will be less...

Is Macrodantin a common one to be prescribed? Anyone else on it? Has it worked??

feedback would be great.

Thanks so much,

Sara

I just finished Macrodantin. Not sure by your post what your doctor gave it to you for? I had a uti. It did work for me. Huggs,
Kelly

Macrodantin is very frequently given for either an active UTI or as a preventive to people who are prone to UTIs. I can't take that particular one because I am allergic to sulfonomides, but it works very well for others.

And only a very small percentage of people taking it will have any of the side effects.

I've taken 50 mg per night for almost 4 months now. The only symptoms I get are loose bowel movements and that is only if I forget to take my acidophilus. I take the acidophilus/bifidus pill in the morning and the antibiotics at night. It has really stopped my recurring UTIs as well as helped with my IC symptoms.

I have a friend that takes Macrodantin as a preventive measure every night and she does fine. However, I'm like Donna, I can't take it. My urologist just put me on doxycycline instead. All meds have side effects, you need to be most careful about mixing the meds. I have found and my doctor told me this too....STOP reading all the side effects, it'll only cause you to be more anxious. So long as you know your drug allergies and your doc is aware of ALL meds you are on, you should be fine. If you take one and notice anything that bothers you call your doctor immediately. They are usually pretty good about alleviating any anxiety with medications. If in doubt, call your local pharmacist and tell him ALL the drugs you are taking and ask him what are the usual, expected side effects. With that....try and relax and do what your doctor says and see if it helps. If you still have anxiety about taking it just call your doc and explain it to him, he may be able to tell you something that will help alleviate your fears. Good luck and let me know how it goes. By the way, macrodantin has been used for years for maintenance therapy for sufferers of frequent UTIs, it's just some of us can't take that type of med due to allergies and have to opt for others. I have been taking macrodantin for almost a year now to avoid UTI's. I take 100 mg each night. It makes me a little naseous, but that is all. As far as I know, it is usually taken once a day to avoid UTI's and I have had it four times a day when I actually have a UTI. Yes, I also stopped reading the side effects. If I get sick for some medication, then I'll know it. No sense making myself anxious over possible things that can happen but usually don't. : )
