atarax versus benedryl

I have just been prescribed Atarax by my Urologist. I attempted to take Benadryl a few weeks ago and it made me very hyper (didn't sleep all night). I was just wondering if anyone had this happen to them with Atarax??

I didn't tolerate the Atarax well... and didn't take it more then once. But, for the life of me, I can't remember what side effect I had. I just remember feeling horrible then discovering, via the PDR, that Atarax has acacia in it. Since I'm VERY allergic to acacia... that explained my reaction. So, I switched to Vistaril instead and had great success with that.

I had the same reaction to both Benadryl & Atarax, but thought it might have been due to interaction with Elavil, which I also take at night? (Before IC, Benadryl used to put me right to sleep...)

Only posting, so you don't feel weird about the Benadryl, because my doctor thought I was nuts, could be that Atarax will work fine for you.

I always try new meds on the weekend so whatever weird thing my body does, I don't have to take it to work with me.

Wishing you success

This week's favorite one-liner:
"I love deadlines. I especially like the whooshing sound they make as they go flying by...

New second favorite:
"And which dwarf are you?."

Adding a third because I'm just so darn easily amused...
"Eagles may soar, but weasels aren't sucked into jet engines."

Current treatments:
-IC diet
-Elavil 20mg at night
-Ditropan 5mg at night
-Continuous use birth control pills (4-5 periods/year)
-Heparin/Marcaine/Sodium Bicarb home instills every night & sometimes in the morning also
-Pyridium if needed, usually once a week or so
-1 Darvocet at bedtime,
-Flexeril 10mg at bedtime
-Dye Free Benadryl for allergies occasionally
-Pelvic floor & myofascial release (external only) physical therapy for 8 weeks, then home exercise program...
-Managing stress
-Fur therapy: Hugging the cat!

I am one of the people out there that can not tolerate Benedryl. It took me a while to figure it out - which also means I can't take Tylenol PM or anything like that. Instead of making me sleepy, it's like I'm jitterry and hyper. Back when I finally made the connection, the doctor said that it is one of the possible side effects from that medication or an adverse reaction - so I don't ever take it. If I need to take an over the counter antihistamine, I can tolerate chlortrimeton (spelling ??) because it has a different active ingredient.

As for atarax, I don't have any problems like that at all. I was on Zyrtec for a while with no problems also. So, hopefully you can take the atarax without having side effects like you did on benedryl. The only way to know is to give it a try.

I hope this helps for you, I sure know it helps me!

Take Care!

I took Benedryl before diagnose of IC for allergies. It worked fine for me. I now take the atarax ( not sure if its helping ) but it is not hurting either. Everyone is different. Good Luck and hope it works for you.
