Acidophilus
If you take antibiotics often..... do you take acidophilus suppliments?
I take antibiotics after sex to prevent UTI. I'm trying to manage the inevitable yeast infections. Any advice on specific suppliments or brands? Do you take it daily? Or just when you are on antibiotics? Or once you have a yeast infection? thx for any info or help!

I have used them. I'm not sure if they made a difference or not --- I think there is conflicting data out there. I know you want to get the kind that is released in the instestines so it bypasses the stomach acids (I think that is why - LOL).
When I took it while on an antibiotic, I always tried to space it out so I wasn't taking both at the same time b/c the antibiotic would just wipe out the good organisms. I would try to take the acidophilus several hours after the antibiotic.

Current IC meds: Elmiron (since 2001), Levaquin (one pill after intercourse to prevent UTIs), Lexapro (since 2003 for depression & anxiety, but also helps my IC)
Past IC meds: Amitriptyline (Elavil), Hydroxyzine (Vistaril), Detrol LA (They all helped, but I was able to discontinue them.)
My IC story: http://www.ic-network.com/patientstories/kim.html It's very outdated now. I've been virtually symptom free and able to eat & drink whatever I'd like for several years now.

I not only take chewable acidopholus while I am on antibiotics, but I also include foods rich in them too, such as yogurt ( which I hate). I always get yeast in my mouth as well as any other palce it likes to grow and it really helps me. I continue using it till the yeast is gone. Judith

I take them, but I'm not sure if they do anything. Supposedly a lot of the ones on the market don't have any active bacteria in them, so you have to do your research to find a good one. I have spoken with researchers who are working on using lactobacillus to treat infections, and I believe there is merit to it. I take Genestra brand on the recommendation of my naturopath. It says it's guaranteed to have the amounts stated on the bottle (I've noticed some just say guaranteed at time of manufacture).
I don't really understand what benefit it will have taking them while on antibiotics, but I do it anyway. I've heard to space it out from when you take the antibiotics, but you're supposed to have a steady amount of antibiotic in your bloodstream so I don't see how that will make a difference. I take it anyway because it can't hurt, but some people say it's better to start taking them after you've stopped the antibiotics.
