Elavil Making It Worse?
Hi Everybody,
I just posted a thread that I had begun Elavil and wanted some feedback on that, and I want to thank all of you who responded. I really appreciate everyone taking their time...
But now, I have a completely new question. Has anyone heard of Elavil making them worse?? I started Elavil on Thursday night and on Saturday I started flaring (I guess, flaring) really bad and it has continued ever since. (Today is Monday night). I am on 25mg, once a day before bed.
I tried to go through my mind and see if anything else has could have done it, but I haven't eaten anything crazy or drank alcohol or anything like that. No sex either. The only thing I can think of, is 2 days before - I started on the Elavil.
Has anyone ever had or heard of this??
Thanks for your time and warm thoughts,
Brian

Hi Brian,
You might check in with your doctor. I'm a big fan of calling in to the nurses when I change anything. That way, my records are more up to date when I go in, and if they think starting or stopping a med is a bad idea they can tell me...
Also, I just jot a note in my datebook if I'm flaring, if I have to take anything for it, how much, whatever I think triggered it, that way I can see if my flares are getting farther apart or not, how bad they are, any patterns..
I've started, stopped, used more medicine this past year than in the 35 before. I'm not saying that to discourage you, but just that if you're having that experience, you're not alone.
And, if things work the first time for you, how fabulous! Enjoy it for all its worth!
Hope you feel better soon!

New second favorite:
"And which dwarf are you?."
Adding a third because I'm just so darn easily amused...
"Eagles may soar, but weasels aren't sucked into jet engines."
Current treatments:
-IC diet
-Elavil 20mg at night
-Ditropan 5mg at night
-Continuous use birth control pills (4-5 periods/year)
-Heparin/Marcaine/Sodium Bicarb home instills every night & sometimes in the morning also
-Pyridium if needed, usually once a week or so
-1 Darvocet at bedtime,
-Flexeril 10mg at bedtime
-Dye Free Benadryl for allergies occasionally
-Pelvic floor & myofascial release (external only) physical therapy for 8 weeks, then home exercise program...
-Managing stress
-Fur therapy: Hugging the cat!

Hi Brian! I haven't personally experienced this side effect with Elavil, but I have with other meds. Sometimes it can be coincidental and sometimes it can be from the med. I agree with Kadi - call your doctor's office and see what they say. Sometimes if you take a med for a couple weeks the side effects subside. On the other hand I have heard people say Elavil can cause urinary retention thus increasing your discomfort. To be on the safe side, I would call your doc and she what he/she suggests.
Hope you are feeling better soon!
Jennifer

I have to agree that you need to call your doctor's office.
I had a negative reaction to elavil --- not a bladder flare, but it shot my blood pressure over 200 --- so I had to stop taking it.
Sending warm hugs,
Donna

I find that Ihave increased bladder pain with any tricyclic. Basically any medicine that dries out my mouth, seems to contribute to bladder pain for me and makes me run to the bathroom every five minutes or less until the med is completely out of my system.
I tried taking it with prelief and thought I had a solution because I went quite a few hours with no pain, but it came back to bite me at 2 in the morning and I was up all night, so I guess that darn tricyclic medicine is just going to wreak havoc on my bladder no matter what I do.
Blessings, Lori
P.S. My uro thinks I am crazy or lying. I know by reading these message boards that I'm not, because others experience this too.

Hi,
I seem to be in the same boat as you. I started taking it 3 days ago and am now feeling awful. I may be feeling that way for another reason, but I think it was the Elavil. It helps right after I take it but then I hurt like crazy 6-7 hours. I'm interested to see everyones responses to your question.

Elavil has saved my life. I take 50mg at night and I am "relatively" pain free. "Relatively" being the key word, to the pain I was in before Elavil. After about a week I started feeling less pain. I was very groogy and had wierd vivid dreams for about 2-3 wks, but they eventually went away.
I'd be careful drawing any conclusions after 2-3 days.
