Question Elavil & retention...do they go together??

Just recently started Elavil (about 5 days ago), i noticed that as soon as i began it i have begun feeling retention when i go to pee. i used to pee VERY easily, never had a problem starting the urine stream, but now i really have to sit & wait, concentrate, turn on the water, all those little tricks to get it going. Then once i go, i feel like there is stilll more left & sure enough I have to start all over again with trying to go. This ALL started when i began elavil. does anyone else have this problem???

also i have HORRIBLE dry mouth...i am guessing that is a side effect also?

Hi Floridamom. I believe this drug can cause retention as I had a similar reaction, but I do have trouble starting my flow anyway. I would call your doctor to see what they say. If you didn't have that problem before and you do now it's very possible. That's the downside of some medications is there side effects, and we all react differently. Good luck to you!!!

Elavil side effects from: http://www.drugs.com/elavil.html

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Call your doctor at once if you have any new or worsening symptoms such as: mood or behavior changes, anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, or if you feel impulsive, irritable, agitated, hostile, aggressive, restless, hyperactive (mentally or physically), more depressed, or have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself.

Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
fast, pounding, or uneven heart rate, chest pain or heavy feeling, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating, general ill feeling;

sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body;

sudden headache, confusion, problems with vision, speech, or balance;

hallucinations, or seizures (convulsions), feeling light-headed, fainting;

restless muscle movements in your eyes, tongue, jaw, or neck, uncontrollable shaking or tremor;

skin rash, severe tingling, numbness, pain, muscle weakness;

easy bruising or bleeding;

extreme thirst with headache, nausea, vomiting, and weakness; or

urinating less than usual or not at all.

Less serious side effects may include:

nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, loss of appetite;

dry mouth, unpleasant taste;

feeling dizzy, drowsy, or tired;

trouble concentrating;

nightmares;

blurred vision, headache, ringing in your ears;

breast swelling (in men or women); or

decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty having an orgasm.

I had to get off of it; I didn't start out using this med for IC; it was for headaches, finally said something to the doctor who prescribe this and he said something like "I'm taking a chance with getting off due to headaches, but its up to me" So I got off of it, I still have retention but not as bad, and the headaches are just coming back after being off of it for about a month. I go to both the Uro and Neurologist in about a month and hopefully we can come up with something.

I had retention on it but not until my 9th month of taking it! It went away as soon as I stopped taking it
