Question about Quercetin/Cystoprotek and flares

Hi, I'm new. I'm a 39-year old female who has had bladder urgency/irritationf/requent urination since early childhood. I was finally diagnosed at age 32 with severe IC.

I have tried quercetin but it always makes my symptoms worse. I noticed is it a major ingredient in Cystoprotek, which I was hoping might be of help to me. I'm still thinking of trying it, because it seems to have such glowing reviews, and I'm wondering if maybe since it's combined with other ingredients it may not have the same effect? I don't know...

Have any of you taken quercetin and/or Cystoprotek and had a flare as a result? If so, did it go away? I read somewhere on this board that a few of you said the flares sometimes go away and then you felt relief.

Also, have any of you tried turmeric, boswellin, and/or MSM for your IC? Any good results?
Thanks so much in advance.

I had a very bad flare, migraine & vomiting from 1 dose of Cystoprotek. It was so bad, I never tried a second dose. But, I later found out I am allergic to shellfish & fish, so I think that's why I reacted so badly to it.
I've not tried any of the other things you mention. I hope you find some relief soon,

This week's favorite one-liner:
"Incontinence Hotline...Can you hold, please?"

New second favorite:
A school teacher was arrested at the airport for trying to go through security with a slide rule & a calculator. He was charged with carrying weapons of math instruction."

Adding a third because I'm just so darn easily amused...
"Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups"

Above funny things are from the "Prairie Home Companion--Pretty Good Joke Book", which I pull out & read when I've had a bad day & really need a laugh...

Current treatments:
-IC diet
-Elavil 20mg at night
-Ditropan 5mg at night
-Continuous use birth control pills (4-5 periods/year)
-Heparin/Marcaine/Sodium Bicarb home instills every night & sometimes in the morning also
-Pyridium if needed, usually once a week or so
-1 Darvocet at bedtime,
-Flexeril 10mg at bedtime
-Dye Free Benadryl for allergies occasionally
-Pelvic floor & myofascial release (external only) physical therapy for 8 weeks, then home exercise program...
-Managing stress
-Fur therapy: Hugging the cat!

it made me flare for about 10 days! but i stuck with it and it was certainly worth it!!!!!! cystoprotek uses a very pure form of quercitin so you might have better luck with it! i hope so because it has been a life saver for me!!!!! i used the msm for a long time. i didn't notice any changes in symptoms when i added it, but now that i'm off of it and several other things i am certainly worse!!! i can't wait to get back again!!!

I was so disappointed that I had a terrible flare from cystoprotek. I tried it for 2 days and couldn't take it anymore. There is some soy in the ingredients which is what I think I reacted to, I am very sensitive to soy. I did go on to try the Desert Harvest Aloe and I have seen improved with that. Everybody is different so it might work for you and I have to tell you they did give me a refund for the cystoprotek.

I can not take regular quercetin, it flares me up big time. But I can take Cystoprotek just fine. The source of their quercetin is different than the source used in most supplements. That said, I don't know if it will flare you, but I do think it's worth a try, I believe it has helped me with my symptoms.

Update! Feeling much better these days! After a year of treatment, and a year and a half at least of symptoms. I'm not feeling normal, but at least I can usually live my life now!

Getting married to a wonderful guy in August 2010

Pelvic pain began July 2008. Urinary frequency began in November of 2008. IC Doctor says I'm one of the worst frequency patients he has had.

Cystoscopy showed evidence of glomerulations on the bladder.

Main symptoms: Frequency mostly. Also some mild to moderate pain. Completed 8 months of physical therapy.

Currently on: IC Diet, Elavil (30mg), Elmiron since June '09 (500mg/day), Hydroxyzine (50mg), Alesse Birth Control to regulate hormones and weekly PTNS.

Previously tried and quit: one series of six instillations, Neurontin, Ditropan, Oxytrol, electric stimulation to the pelvic floor, Desert Harvest Aloe, Cystoprotek and Flomax.

Hi,

I just want to say how much Cystoprotek has really helped me! I would definitely recommend you give it a try. I feel like I need to say this because I would probably have never tried it were it not for a couple of the gals on here (like Anogobleoba above) singing it's praises so I feel like I should do the same so maybe someone else like me might really benefit from it....

Thank you all so much for your replies!! I'm sorry some of you couldn't handle the Cystoprotek - I worry that may happen to me, but I think I'm going to try it.

As for an0bgobeloba, exactly how bad was that 10-day flare? Why do you think that happened?

Another question - Does Cystoprotek help repair the mucousal lining in the bladder? And is the 'GAG layer' the same thing as the mucousal lining?

Another question - I read in an archived post on here about Sialec acid, which is in mucin (mucousal protective lining) of bladder, intestines, ... and there is a product called Sialex I bought last week because I wanted to try it. But the research article I read on here says it can be harmful to the body if taken when a person has a problem absorbing it (something to that effect) and that it must be known for sure if that is or isn't the case before trying it. It is sold all over the internet as Sialex by Ecological Formulas. Has anyone ever tried this product?

Thanks so much.

To answer one of your questions:
yes, the mucousal lining in the bladder is pretty much identical with the GAG layer and yes, Cystoprotek is supposed to help with this. However, you have to stick to a daily high dosage (see pack) to make it work because only a small amount of the GAG replenishment ingredients will be absorbed by your body/bladder.

I hope you have more luck than me - I could not take it because of my sensitive stomach!
