My abnormal liver test!!
Hi I am a bit shocked because I had a routine Liver Function Test this week and it came back abnormal in the extreme! I have been drinking Marshmallow root tea for just under 3 weeks using the raw herb. I have had lots of it (15 cups a day) also I have started Cystoprotek just a week ago. These are the only 2 things I have changed since my last test which was the good side of normal. I dont drink alcohol now as it hurts! I am lookign for anything that may have caused this as it has gone to 5 times over the high end or the range! The doctor said it must be something acute as is has come on quickly any thoughts? Mazzie

Are you on any meds? Elmiron did that to me, and many other medications can affect you that way.

Yes I agree, I would be checking in to the med part. It certianly would do a search on the tea alos, 15 cups a day seems to be an awful lot.

What scary news to receive!
I agree with what the others have mentioned but am wondering if they are going to re-do the test? Seems like the possibility of error within the test itself should also be checked.

my liver and meds
Hi thanks for the replies, yes I am on 2 Ultam and 2 paracetamol daily for neck and back pain and 5omg Amitryptiline a day but I have been on alot more than last year before my op and had a normal tests. I have increased ami from 25mg to 50mg in the past 2 months. My new test is suddenly 5 times the upper limit. I only eat organic meat and veg. I do eat fish twice a week and only eat pears as fruit. My doc said something acute must have happened because of the high reading. I am concerned but hope it settles! Mazzie x

Your Dr. needs to do some investigative work to find the cause. Looking back, are there any new symptoms you overlooked that could give you a clue?

Hi there! You must be so worried. I'm sorry to hear what you are going through. I definitely agree with others that the docs need to find the cause ASAP. I'm not sure if you've had this done, but you may want to ask your doctor to test you Amitryptiline levels in your blood. My regular doc didn't even know you could test for this, but my uro requested it to make sure it was a safe level. I think they were making sure my body was digesting it correctly. He also has my liver enzymes tested as this is a med that can effect liver function. Wishing you the very best. Please keep us updated on how you are doing.
Best wishes,
Jennifer

Hello friends. Doctors today seem so very busy. In my opinion we must take control of our own health. Such things as reminding our Doctors that perhaps a liver test is needed. I am on many meds that could hurt my liver. I see the Doctor about every three months if no other problems appear. I tell him every six months I think a liver test is due and he agrees. If I did not remind him I doubt he would remember.
Mazzie I feel good that your Doctor seems to be on top of the abnormal liver function. Hopefully he will get to the cause. Sending positive thoughts, Hug, Ziggy

Marshmallow tea is a diuretic --- if you've been drinking 15 cups a day it could be causing some problems.

Iron supplements can cause abnormal liver function test
I was told that iron supplements likely caused my abnormal liver function tests. I quit taking them, and all has been well.

I would have to agree with Donna. Drinking 15 cups of Marshmmallow root tea is WAY to much! Two cups a day will work fine. When it comes to herbs most of the time LESS is better. Just because it is an herb, in excess can have an adverse affect on the body. If it helps at all 2 cups will suffice.
hugs and blessings
