Elavil & Getting Fat
Hi there. I've been on Elavil not quite a month yet and have gained over 20 pounds. None of my work clothes fit and don't own a pair of jeans I can fully zip.
Is it the Elavil that's doing this, has anyone else experienced this. I take 25mg at bedtime. When I first took it, I was out like a light within an hour of taking it and now it doesn't help me sleep at all and doesn't seem to be doing much with the pain. How long did any of you take it before you saw a difference?
It's hard to exercise when you're in pain. I usually walk every evening in the summer pre-diagnosis of IC though. I'm not sure if my bladder will allow me to walk this year. My husband and I enjoy taking rides on the Harley and not sure if my bladder will allow that either with all the vibration and I'll drive my husband nutts stopping in every town to pee.
OH THE JOYS OF IC, HUH? ha ha ha ha.

Ah yes the Elavil....
Nasty lil side effect of elavil.....the weight creeps on and in my case doesn't come back off with out some SEVERE dieting and excercise. Many people have expereinced the weight gain. I found the weight still isn't coming off even tho I've stopped taking it. Others have reported that their metabolism just *isn't the same* now that they've stopped elavil.
I'm off to the gym tonite........

Oh this is a side effect that makes me cringe just thinking about it.
My uro wanted me to try it for three months and after two of those months I stopped taking it. I know I gained around 15 to 20 pounds too. (Of course it was around the holidays and that sure didn't help.)
Some people love it and just don't give in to the temptations. But I have no willpower when it comes to sweet stuff. They have had great success taking it.
I hope it helps you though...and you can ride the bike again!!

Yeah, that sure can be a side effect of Elavil. I have been taking 25mg at bedtime for 2 years and hadn't gained anything. In fact, I lost some when I watched what I ate and dieted. Maybe you could talk to your doc about a lower dose or even about discontinuing if you feel it isn't helping? I am sure he or she would want to know about the rapid weight gain.
NOW, after adding Lexapro to my regimen about 6 months ago I have gained close to 10 pounds...... It IS depressing. I am in the process of getting some feedback from my doc on another med. for my depression. I'm not going off of Elavil b/c that alone didn't cause weight gain, but I empathize as Lexapro has caused some for me. From the little research I have done it looks like a lot of antidepressants can cause weight gain...
I have been working out on an elliptical machine for a couple of months and have lost 3 pounds of it. Have you ever tried that machine at the gym? It is VERY low impact. Might be a good one to check into when you feel up to it.

Current IC meds: Elmiron (since 2001), Levaquin (one pill after intercourse to prevent UTIs), Lexapro (since 2003 for depression & anxiety, but also helps my IC)
Past IC meds: Amitriptyline (Elavil), Hydroxyzine (Vistaril), Detrol LA (They all helped, but I was able to discontinue them.)
My IC story: http://www.ic-network.com/patientstories/kim.html It's very outdated now. I've been virtually symptom free and able to eat & drink whatever I'd like for several years now.
