Bladder Better after Keflex???
I have just been on keflex antibitoic for 14 days now. I noticed that my bladder pain had been WAY better than ever. The doctor at the urgent care who prescribed me the keflex gave me a months worth of the medication because she said some bacteria are hard to get rid of.
Anyhow, I thought about staying on the keflex for the 28 days, but now I am getting a yeast infection and have intense itching all around the anal area and some in the vulva area, but no discharge yet. My doctor called and said the culture I left last week was clear and that the keflex killed the bacteria so I do not need to take the keflex anymore. She told me to get some of the over the counter yeast cream to use down there in the anal/vaginal area for now. I am leary of this though, as it may bring on another UTI. I mean I am thinking by using the cream that it will keep it to moist down there and spread bacteria and cause another bladder infection.
anyhow, I am confused at how I can feel better after taking the keflex. Wouldn't this mean that my IC may possibly be caused by a bacteria? My urogyne is very stubborn on this issue. I went to see him for my annual appointment last week and he said that it was just a coencidense that My bladder pain was better and said that if he had a migraine and took a cirpo his headache would likely feel better too, saying that it is just a coencidense. For me, my hubby and I totally disagree with him on that issue. I am sorry, but I have constant bladder pain all the time. Why would my pain get better whenever I take certain antibitoics? I mean if my IC had nothing to do with bacteria, then the keflex would not phase it at all in terms of pain.
I also know that some people say that antibiotics has anti-inflammitory agents, and maybe they do, but not enough to take your pain away from what I was told. Meaning an antibitoic is no where near the strength of a pain medication, so it would highly unlikley cure or make your pain way less. I am confused now. I likely will have to stop the keflex due to the yeast issue, but am sure my pain will come back full force. This is so frustrating. Any ideas?

That is exactly why I had a broth culture. Everytime I took antibiotics I felt better, then gradually got worse again. Once I was on antibiotics long enough, the pain never came back....and it's been two years...and I eat/drink/do whatever I want.
I've been told about the anti-inflammatory properties of antibiotics, too, but I agree. How can it completely get rid of HORRIFIC pain?
I just encourage people to take control of their health and fight for what their guts tell them. If I hadn't done that, I'd still be in pain today.

3/2006 began PN symptoms
7/18/2006 broth culture sent (found Strep D) stopped Elmiron & Elavil and began long-term amoxicillin - IC symptoms relieved at last!
09/29/2006 PNMLT found pudendal nerve damage on rt side (nerve block to be done Oct 4)
10/20/2006 - lyrica for PN pain (didn't last)
11/20/2006 - cymbalta for PN (didn't last)
12/2006 - stopped all meds and started Dr. Moldwin's therapy of valium and PT for PFD, which is still working for me
UPDATE 7/1/2008 - weaning off the valium...taking 2mg nightly about 5 days a week, so doing great. No more pudendal nerve pain, although I'm careful about how I sit at work and try to exercise to stay relaxed to minimize PFD. A powerplate workout machine helps massage those inner PF muscles, and I take MSM and glucosamine (in MonaVie) religiously, which are both natural antiinflammatories. I feel GREAT!
UPDATE 2/16/2010 - completely pain free!
Looks like the "IC" pain caused my PFD, which pinched and damaged my pudendal nerve, which in turn sends out misguided signals to my PF muscles....battling this pain cycle, but at least I have been pain-free bladder-wise for 2 years now!
JMHO - I don't believe that antibiotic therapy should be considered controversial....the theory that "IC" is a disease should be controversial. I believe that we all must find out what causes the damage to our bladder linings, stop that, and then let it heal. In only 9 short months, I added EVERYTHING back to my diet and have been "IC"-free for 2 years and counting.

Keflex is one of the antibiotics that I am allergic to, but I do know that when ever I take antibiotics, I usually end up with a yeast infection afterwards. This is quite common, I'm told, and my Dr. recommended Pro-biotics, which help put the "friendly" bacteria back that the antibiotics have depleted. Some women say that eating yogurt is sufficient, but not for this girl. I take an enteric coated capsule called GR8-Dophilus, but it is a Canadian product. You should be able to find something similar. Mine covers 8 different strains & has a 4 billion potency with FOS. I take 1-3 a day, keep them in the fridge after you've opened it. The yeast infection has nothing to do with the IC, just the antibiotic side effects. I pray that your pain & suffering will ease.
Good luck and God Bless.

Hi Ladies.
Holly: Thanks for the tip. I am going to do the broth culture, but now I have to wait until I am off the antibitoic for at least a few days. I just finished my last dose yesterday.
Curelette: I already take probiotics, have been taking them for a long time. I also upped them while I was on the kelflex. I take floragen3 two times a day and also florastor once a day, but I still got the itchiness. I am going to see my doctor today to ask for a diflucan.
