Valium, Skelaxin, Flexeril for PFD? Thoughts?

I am not diagnosed with IC. In March, doc said my cysto showed "urethrotrigonitis".

I did 2 months of urethral suppositories. I took a 0.5 mg Xanax dose prior to each suppository insertion to try to help me relax.

My pelvic floor PT specialist says the suppositories might have exacerbated my PFD issue. (although I just got diagnosed with PFD last week so Urogyn didn't know I had PFD or at least didn't tell me I had PFD...)

I'm reading here where folks take muscle relaxants for the PFD.

My hubby separated his shoulder last year and ended up in ER. He was given Skelaxin 800mg. He took a couple so the bottle is in the cabinet. I decided to try 400mg last night. Noticed no effects whatsoever. No pain decrease. No drowsiness. Nothing. I'm rather small in physique so that's why I split the caplet in half. (My BMI is just over 18.)

My Urogyn is not too keen on prescribing anything. He did give me Ibuprofen 800mg RX in March. (again he says no IC so the NSAID Ibuprofen "shouldn't" hurt me....)

So I'm contemplating an appt with gen practice MD next week to discuss muscle relaxants.

I read on this site where Dr Moldwin gives his PFD patients Valium 2mg routinely.

What are your thoughts/experiences?

THanks!

Post Muscle relaxers

Hi MomRN,

I was diagnosed with PFD in May of this year. I didn't even know what PFD and then I was diagnosed with :/

So apparently it doesn't make my IC any better. So my urogyn has been experimenting with muscles relaxants. I have tried Baclofen 10mg 3 x's a day with little success. The doctor said it is suppose to help with the spasm, but it doesnt seem to help that much. I also was put on Valium 2mg 4 x's daily 2 weeks ago. I really honestly don't notice a dfifference with that either. I feel more sedated than anything. But everyone is different. So maybe ask your doctor about it. Good luck.

I am also on skelaxin & valium (vaginal suppository). My pain Clinic Dr. put me on it. for the pain I have for IC. I take both at bedtime. It was making me way to tired. falling to sleep driving to work & at may desk at work. So we cut it in half I am still having the symptoms so I stopped them on my own this pass Thur. When my Pain clinic Dr. finds out she will not be happy. I just can't live like a zombie any more. I had to find some one to drive to and from work with me. Which is not easy I live 45 min away from work. Sometimes I still have to drive myself and I am so scared. so I decided not to take them any more. I just can't do it.

I have tried several muscle relaxers, but preferred low dose valium 2mg 3Xday.
It seemed to be the most effective for me without any side effects. Muscle relaxers tend to knock me out cold. I was using the valium to help with PFD, and in doing so that also gave me a lot of relif from my VV
Best wishes, Bri

Let's see... I originally posted this on Saturday and today is Monday. I took 800mg Skelaxin on Saturday evening and I was super tired. I told DH I wasn't sure if it was the Skelaxin or that I'd laid on a lovely raft in the pool and sunshine half the afternoon. That laziness/relaxing/loveliness seems to ZAP my energy.

I called Gen Practice MD today. Nurse (former co-worker and sweetheart) called this afternoon and said she'd ask and call me back. SHe didn't get me called back this evening.

I told her about Skelaxin not being helpful and that I'd read Valium sometimes help PFD. I said I'd come in to see doc if that was better. So she might call back and give me an appointment.

I think I could just take it right after therapy? I'm not sure. I'm hoping for a short term helper if the pain is going to increase initially with therapy.

So.... no answers just yet.
