I asked my doctor about it and she said that I was so sensitive to anything in the vagina that she wasn't too interested in trying it (as a supository). How about the oral nystantin, have any of you tried it? She told me it was a very old medication. I have been on Diflucan off and on and I still seem to get yeast problems. I am looking into taking accidopholis and also taking refined sugar out of my diet. In addition I have a hormonal imbalance but can't seem to take the estrogen that has been compounded for me without propolyn glycol. It seems to increase my frequency.

Hi Cheries,
i seem to have the same problem as you. I have been dealing with yeast for most of my adult life but only in the past several years it has become chronic. I guess since my immune system became compromised after many viruses it is harder for it to keep the yeast in check.
I started on a really good probitotic about a months ago and although it is helping with so many things it hasn't worked it's way into re-establishing vaginal flora.
This past monday I went to see an integrative dr who put me on oral nysatain because he feels that candida should be addressed in gut as well as in the vagina. That's where it all starts. My gyn has been trying to adress it with vaginal creams that I cannot take! they burn the heck out of me soooooooo we stopped that route. He then put me on diflucan....but it didn't help and caused a lot of side effects. I suggested nystatin vag tablets and they work while I am using them without really irritating like the creams do. the creams would land me in bed for a few days because the pain would be so intense. Anyway, the nystatin tabs do calm thngs down for me but as soon as I go off of them the yeast will return in about 3 days causing pain and discharge. My gyn then suggested using the nystatin vag tablets twice a week as a prophylactic measure. Now I'm noticing the yeast is returning after 2 days of not being on it!
when I met with this new integrative dr this past monday he said that re-establishing the intestinal flora is key and while we're doing that it's ok to use the vag tablets We're also doing Nystatin Oral Powder (no added ingredients) 3 times a day. He wants me to do 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off and of course lots of good quality probitoics.
I posted last night that I had a bladder flare........and burning. I thought it might be my new supplements so I did not take them today. I did however continue the Nystatin and sure enough about an hour and a half after I took my morning dose the bladder pain and burning started up again. It may be irritating me so I am going to use half of the recommended dose. The good thing about the powder you can adjust it very easily. Also, when I am out of Nystatin Vag tablets all I do is put some of the powder in clear gelatin capsules that I keep on hand and insert that. I think it's even cheaper in the long run.......if anything it's convenient when I can't go out a nd get a script.

Why are you on estrgoen? is it for HRT? are you menopausal?
I am on a patch that works great! it's very low dose and I change it twice a week.

I've got a yeast problem too; I get it vaginally and also in the throat and mouth (oral thrush). I take the oral Nystatin pills pretty often for it and it seems to work. Diflucan works better for me but my doctor didn't want to keep prescribing that all the time for fear of selecting for resistant yeast.

Anyway, the oral Nystatin doesn't seem to bother me much although, if I have thrush, my doc said occasionally let a tablet melt in your mouth and that is DISGUSTING. They taste AWFUL.

have you tried the Nystatin Powder? I can't take those dark brownish nystatin tabs. I'm bothered by a lot of the ingredients and actually broke out in a rash on my torso and ribs when I was on them about 6 months ago. I've been able to take the powder without that problem but have now noticed that since I started taking a larger dose I have more burning and pain in the bladder. The burning seems to be external too....like my urethra is inflamed. A quarter teapsoon of the powder is equivalent to one tablet of 500,000 units which is the normal dosage 3 times a day but given my senesitive nature I'm going to have to try less than an eigth of a teaspoon and see how it goes.
I once had thrush so bad on the tonuge I couldn't eat for days! That was after heavy antibiotics while in the hospital for a mjaor surgery.
You know, there is also an oral Nystatin Liquid Suspension that is banana flavored. Of course it has sugar in it which is not good for yeast but I've used it in the past and it has helped. I also used to give it to some of my dental patients (when I was working!).

Thanks for the feedback mel. I am going to go to a new gyno next week and really looking forward to it as he treats only vaginal and IC problems. I am convinced that the yeast problem is also related to the hormones. I know I need vaginal hormones or vaginal estrogen, but can't tolerate it. Any ideas in that area? I have the Climera patch .0375 that i change twice a week also.

Have you tried vagifem vag tablet inserts? I too couldn't tolerate a lot of the creams but this seems to work really well and I don't have a problem with it.
I use Vivelle dot .0375 patch twice a week which seems to be ok.
After my hysterecomy they did not place me on hormones for fear that it would flare up the endometriosis (which I don't think I really had). Anyway, 2 years of no hormones did more harm than good. It did nothing for the yeast and caused other problems. I don't think the little amount of hormones i the patch would cause more yeast.
Let us know what the dr says.

Thanks Katrina.............I know first hand how horrible yeast treating creams are!
Vagifem is a vaginal hormone replacement tablet. I haven't had any problem with it .....I use it twice a week (although I've missed a lot lately because I've been treating the vag yeast with Nystatin vag tablets....and how uch stuff can you put in there....hahaha). I use the hormone patch twice a week too.
