birthcontrol & antibiotics?

Is it true that if you are on birth control, and you take an antibiotic, you can get pregnant? Or is that just a myth?

If you have concerns, ask your pharmacist.

I've always heard that is very true.

Current IC meds: Elmiron (since 2001), Levaquin (one pill after intercourse to prevent UTIs), Lexapro (since 2003 for depression & anxiety, but also helps my IC)

Past IC meds: Amitriptyline (Elavil), Hydroxyzine (Vistaril), Detrol LA (They all helped, but I was able to discontinue them.)

My IC story: http://www.ic-network.com/patientstories/kim.html It's very outdated now. I've been virtually symptom free and able to eat & drink whatever I'd like for several years now.

Many meds make a PCP less effective. I think I was always told to use a back up method because it brings the effectiveness of the BCP down significantly...it still helps but not as well.

see.. that makes me a little upset, because no one has ever told me that! i saw it on a episode of family guy! a cartoon! and i have been on 2 antibiotics lately, and both times i told them what medications i was on.. including the birthcontrol! and not one told me anything about using a backup method or anything! i have been worried lately but kept saying to myself that i couldnt because i am on bc... so thank you for your quick responses! i greatly appritiate them all!

Not all antibiotics will effect the bc the same way...nor will all bc pills react exactly the same....it is something to talk to your doctor about. Now the shot....is a hormone too I believe and would most likely have some effect too...but like I said not all are the same. IF you ask your doc about the shot let us know what you find out. Thanks!
As far as other things that effect it....many anticonvulsants do (which some of us take for pain) not really sure off the bat what else all does. If you are on other meds you need to discuss this with your doctor....research the drug on line it would normally say if it effects hormones in anyway.

Glad your not pregnant watergal.

NEW QUESTION! does anybody know whats wrong with me?

i recently had a scare of being pregnent.... i took a test and it said no! i am on birthcontrol, the shot depovera, but with taking antibiotics i thought what if! well since that test i have had many weird things happen! first there was this white creamy substance coming out of my nipples... does that happen usually before you start to show? but anyways, whatever it is its leaking every where! i have to were pads in my bras, and it squirts very easily now, and it is just getting worse, and more is coming out every day! then i have been gaining weight for a while, but recently it has been like 5 pounds a week! i went from 125 to 145 and am still getting bigger! my tummy sticks out, but i thought it was just me getting fat, but my boyfriend pushed on it and said its not squishy, it is hard! so can it still be fat? i took two more pregnantcy tests.. and they both said no! does anyone know if these are signs of being pregnant, or if they are just weird things i need to get checked out! and also if they are signs of being pregnant... what would cause it not to show up? 3 times on a test? i feel so weird! please help me out i have an appointment in about two weeks! it was the soonest! but i just hate waiting! anything helps! thank you just for reading! hope to get some answers and advise!

I would say a preg. test at the drs office is in line for you. Your symptoms sound like preg., but if you took 3 at home test and all 3 showed negative I am not sure. I know when I took the shot many, many years ago, it messed with my periods and cycle, but I never had the discharge coming from my breast like that. I only did that when I was preg with my kids. I hope things turn out the way you are hoping for.

I would see your doc very soon. While those can be symptoms of pregnancy, you can lactate without a bun in the oven. It can be a hormonal imbalance or a pituitary thing and you need to be seen by a physician to evaluate such things properly.

Hugs,
Barb
