resistence to antibiotics - Interstitial Cystitis Network Support Forum

I am resistent to most all antibiotics including cipro. I got this super bug, my pharmacist said that 20 percent of the worlds population is like this now due to over use of antibiotics. I asked my mom and she said I was not on many antibiotics as a young child. I do remember from 20 years on and off I have been on macrobid antibiotic. My pharmacist said that this antibiotic is not the same as cipro and that the worst thing is I would deveolope a allergy to macrobid which I have not developed. I see my doctor next week and in the mean time he called me and put me on a 875mg. Amoxicillin/Clavulanic Acid 3 times a day. It is suppossed to be a strong antibiotc and they had to special order it in because of the cost of this drug and they rarely used it. My concern is someday I will get sick with a bug and no antibiotic will take it out. This is the second time I have developed this bug in the last 2 months. He wants to make sure it is gone so I will have to go back and test it again. If this has happened to you or you know about it please let me know.

Well I have gotten resistant to one antibiotic...Flagyl ....luckily for me if enough time goes by since the last time I have taken it I sometimes works in me again. The big difference for me here is that I definatly have taken a lot of antibiotcs especially that one. None the less I know your fears because I have them too. I have been taking many vitamins to help strengthen my immune system...for that reason and others and it is helping (THANK GOD!!!).

Have you tried any natural means to help you with the bug?

I do have a pamphlet on the use of antibiotics....In my pamphlet where it talks about resistance this is what is says:
"Sometimes bacteria can develop ways to survive and multiply, even when an antibiotic is given. This means that the bacteria have become "resistant: to the antibiotic and the antibiotic may not be able to effectively fight the infection. Your doctor will then have to prescribe a different antibiotic.
Antibiotic resistance is a serious healthcare problem worldwide. As bacteria become resistant to antbiotics, it becomes harder to fight infections.
Thats why its importatnt to take an antibiotic for the full course of treatment , as your doctor has prescribed. Likewise, you should never take an antibiotic on your own or without a prescription."

Some natural means are: garlic, sugar, Yogurt, red wine, Astragalus. I sure hope you find the answer.

I know your fears I have been on a lot of antibotics throughout my life. it seems I am always coming done with some kind of infection. The only one I seem to have problems with is amoxcillin. I wish you well good luck.

One of the things that has happened since the beginning of antibiotics is that, because they were like miracle treatments, antibiotics were over-used. This resulted in some bacteria developing that are resistant to antibiotics --- so even if you personally have not taken many antibiotics, you could be exposed to a resistant strain which is difficult to control.

I have been treated with a lot of antibiotics and have developed allergies to both sulfa and penicillin, which can also be a disadvantage of taking too many. I had taken a lot of both drugs before I developed allergies to them so don't ever think that because you've taken a drug before, you can't be allergic to it.

Thank you Donna, Emily, and Katrina and anyone else who has replied to my messages with helpfull knowledge and support. Sometimes I feel so alone with this diease. I am not getting better with my kidney infection on the medication I am taking which is a pretty strong antibiotic. I have 4 more days I just hope and pray it works. I will keep you posted.

Cynd if you feel you are getting worse maybe you should contact your dr. or go to the er. I hope you feel better soon.

I have had many bugs that are resistant, but thankfully they are usually at least sensitive to some antibiotics. When they do a culture and sensitivity on your urine they test to see which antibiotic will work the best. Sometimes a bug will be sensitive to every drug, other times it will be resistant to a few and sometimes it can happen that it is resisitant to every drug they test. That is when they bring out the big guns, like Tobramycin and Gentamycin. These drugs are aminoglycosides and they reserve them for very serious infections,. They are given by IV. Those are the ones I always get when I get my infections in combination with IV ampicillin, because I get extremely ill. The drug you got is also known as Augmentin. It is a strong one. i have a lot of reaction to anti. but one that does work for me is leviquin its a form of cipro but somehow diff. it fights off more batrica then then cipro does. if i'm understanding right.
I have had to take anti. since birth because of U.T.I i'm 30 years old now. What i would give for me to go a year without a uti.

Thank you Judith for those two antibiotics, my kidney pain is getting worse. I was on Levoquin Dixifireball and it did do a better job. The best was when I went into emergency last wed and they put me on one of those antibiotis you are talking about and I think it helped for a time. I need to go back to my doctor and maybe hospital. Thank you for your support I think I have a better idea what is going on and what I need to do. I will let you know what is happening.

Well I eventually did go to emergency and there was no way I was going anywhere else until I got some treatment. Its to bad it took six weeks with a lot of pain and medication before they treated me. Thanks

for your support I have three more days of IV and then they will give me some oral medication.

I feel like I have been to hell and back and I am looking forward to feeling better. Your posts helped, I think it would have been much harder not knowing what signs to watch and what to do when oral antibiotics are not doing it.

A couple weeks from now I am going to talk to my doctor about why I am resistent and what to do in the future.

Its taken almost two weeks of being on Gentamicin through I.V. therapy that I was able to do at home. I am not sure if anyone else has done this it is fairly new at my hospital. They gave me a kit and a pump that I could do at home because going to the hospital twice a day can be draining.

I had to take long acting gravel to stop the nausea and upset stomach that I got from a pharmacist behind the counter. A nurse called me and told me to do this and to call anytime that I needed help. I think I am turning the corner now because in the morning I have very little pain in my kidney.

My doctor said after the first week of I.V. therapy that I had to do more because the infection showed up when they did a blood test. He said I had to tough it out and sometimes that is what I am best at. So I took my gravel something I did not have in the first week to help me do another week. I had to go to the hospital every 2 to 3 days to get a stint in my arm to put my I.V. medicine into.

I still need my urologist to look at my bladder and kidneys but my doctor reasured me that my kidney was okay. They measure at the hospital how much my kidney is working and my kidney is filtering things okay. My grandmother died from kidney disease back then they did not have what they do now when kidneys stop working. The Sun Is Great Today Im Going outside
