Cysto done without anastetic

Hi Im in Newfoundland and I have to get a cysto possible biopsi without anastetic. I called and asked because I had it done in New Brunswick, Moncton when I was in University without anything besides orange juice with some sedative and it was awful. I have three urinary tract openings very close together and two go no where so they kept sticking me trying to get it through I didn't know that so I had no idea what they were doing. Besides it being very humilating experience and yes I have had a baby and didn't find it that as humiliating...It was very painful. My mom had it done here about 14 years ago and she was put under general and my brother had it done six years ago and was put under. SO I can't understand why I can't do it another way. I was so put off by the expereince that I have been putting off a cysto for two years...I can't wait any longer cause I bleed alot from my urethra and my big fear is bladder cancer.
If I could find out if a doctor somewhere else puts u asleep for it I would fly if I had to to be able to do it....does anywone know what they do in their provinces? Thanks

Good morning.

I am having a little difficulty understanding exactly what has transpired. That being said, I would be cautious about any other procedures until you see a specialist or seek another opinion.

While it may be a clear IC issue, it seems by your post that there is some confusion about the procedure and the best way for you to have it. I am not sure given the problems you describe, what your best solution might be.

Most of us have this done in the hospital with anesthesia.

Please read the patient handbook on this site as well as try to get a copy of Dr. Moldwin's book, which is the second link. It is a valuable guide for many of your questions.

You will no doubt get many replies with excellent advice as well. Good luck with getting the proper advice and treatment (s).

Hi Carolyn,

I have had 14 cystoscope under anesthesia done in the hospital in Ontario..

I would go for a second opinion if I were you..
How about calling your Minister of your Health board office in Newfoundland to ask about this procedure..
Good luck Carolyn..

Hugs, Debbie

They think I have IC but they are not sure. The person doing it is a urologist named Dr. Best in St. John's, as well I called the urologist in Grand Falls, the only other one on the island. The time before I had a cysto plus my bladder stretched and a biopsi done in Mocton, New Brunswick, without being put to sleep. They do not use any anesthesia for a cystoscope or biopsi or hydro here in newfoundland. This according to the urologist is because "where it is so quick we find no need for it". I asked could I have it done with being put to sleep, they said no. I called the MInister of health and they said that it was determined that it was unnesssary to administer anesthesia for the procedure even if a biopsi was being done, and that urologists may not book hospital time for that procedure...gross eh?
My husband is from Orono, Ontario so maybe I can get a referral to a urologist there and ask if they would put me asleep for the procedure....

Hi Carolyn:

Wow that is so werid that they think that this procedure does not need anesthesia..
Carolyn I only live like 20 minutes from Orono, Ontario.
I am from Peterborough..
So there is a IC Clinic in Kingston, Ontario at the Kingston General Hospital which is like a two and half hour drive from Orono..
There are lots of good urologists there and that is where I had all my procdures done at..

It is ever a small world to say the least about your husband home being so close by me..
If you want to get in touch with me by e-mail ,just private message me alright..

Hugs, Debbie

Hi Carolyn,
I live in Northern Ontario and have had cysto's done with out the anesthesia.
While I did find it uncomfortable, it was manageable. I did'nt need to have the biopsy, so I imagine that this changes things a little. My Urologist believes that the cysto and Hydro can all be done with out the anesthesia. I believe that it should be done with one. Why after all of the suffering that we already go thru, should we indure anymore? I guess there is always drugs that would make things a little easier on us before the tests, but I for one don't like to take anything that is not really needed. My Urologist explains to me that the hospital operating room is so over booked here that they need to do these procedures (when they can) with out the anesthesia. There is also the fact that being put out is always a risk.
I hope that you can get an apointment with someone else to get a second opinion, it's always a good idea to make a well informed decison.
The IC clinic in Kingston would be wonderful, if you can get in.
Please let us know how you make out.
Take Care and Be Well, Joanne

Cysto

Hi Carolyn,
I have had many cysto's done both ways. I had my actual biopsy done while I was awake. The fear ahead of time was the worst part. I asked the doctor for tranqualizers ahead of time so I could take one the morning of the procedure.

If you really feel you need to be sedated I would go to another Urologist. I know it's easier for me to say because I don't live where you live. The one thing I would be a little concerned about is the fact that you said you were bleeding from the Urethra. I would think that would warrant you to be put to sleep.

Good luck.

I think Im going to look into going to peterborough for the procedure..Maybe we can visit the grandparent when we are there. I really am nervous about doing it awake..Ya I have done it already but it was awful..I am not one to take drugs without needing them, so I hate going to sleep for it, actually Im not sure even if I can because I had a reaction when I was put asleep for dental work. Hmm I have some oxycondone left over from surgery for my knees so maybe I will take one when I get back to the hotel to get through it. Providing that they don't give me nothing. Anyway I guess im just alittle chicken.
