monthlong doxycycline regimen is OVER!
and i feel good! i even ate strawberries! the thing that had me most convinced that this worked was when i had my cycle this past week. i had no bladder pain at all like i usually do. i had lots of pain, but none in my bladder. it was all a little higher up.
i'm so happy about this. i finally feel like a real human again.
my gyn wants me to keep using the oxytrol patch for another month, and then i get to stop that too.
thanks for letting me update y'all.

This week's favorite one-liner:
"I love deadlines. I especially like the whooshing sound they make as they go flying by...
New second favorite:
"And which dwarf are you?."
Adding a third because I'm just so darn easily amused...
"Eagles may soar, but weasels aren't sucked into jet engines."
Current treatments:
-IC diet
-Elavil 20mg at night
-Ditropan 5mg at night
-Continuous use birth control pills (4-5 periods/year)
-Heparin/Marcaine/Sodium Bicarb home instills every night & sometimes in the morning also
-Pyridium if needed, usually once a week or so
-1 Darvocet at bedtime,
-Flexeril 10mg at bedtime
-Dye Free Benadryl for allergies occasionally
-Pelvic floor & myofascial release (external only) physical therapy for 8 weeks, then home exercise program...
-Managing stress
-Fur therapy: Hugging the cat!

I'm so glad it helped! Do you feel you are back to normal as far as urgency/frequency goes, too, like a complete cure? I hope so! Thanks for letting us know! I am also taking Doxycycline, started the "cure" on 13 Sep so have a couple more weeks to go still...keeping my fingers crossed...
Blessings, L.

urgency and frequency are down. pain is almost gone completely. still have spasms every now and then. but not all the time.
i think my doc said when i started that if the symptoms are still improved in a few months, we can consider it successful.
but for now, i'm taking what i can get.
good luck! hope it works for you too, lori.

For Holly
Hi Holly,
Regarding the antibiotic treatment that you have been taking, I wanted to ask you if you don't mind if you had your urine tested for any of the organisms mentioned in that article on doxycycline. So what I am asking is did your doctor have your urine tested to see if you did have a urinary tract infection that this particular antibiotic would eradicate. I greatly appreciate any assistance or info you don't mind sharing with us. Thanks very much!!!
And I also wanted to say that I am SO pleased for you that this treatment was successful and that you are doing so well. This is just wonderful when one of us can find a treatment that not only relieves our pain and symptoms but hopefully may keep our symptoms at bay for the rest of our life.
I am just so happy for you - maybe a little envious!! - but none the less very very happy!!!
LOUISE

hey, louise. i've had numerous urine cultures done. they all come back sterile. even had one a week before i started the treatment that came back sterile although i was in pain and had sandy stuff in my urine. go figure. my doc said they think the particular bacteria that is causing the symptoms is one that grows in the bladder environment, but won't grow in a culture. i'm beginning to believe him. hope you are able to find something that works for you too. i don't know how long this will last, but i'm enjoying it while i can.

I'm still in the middle of it (one week to go) and I'm flaring really badly - most likely because of the Lupron injection (they said my symptoms would get worse the first two weeks.) It's funny, I felt better, then last night and today my bladder has been killing me. So I can only assume the hormones are kicking in and I'm getting that two-week time of "ick" before the (hopefully) relief.
But...makes me think...if my bladder is still flaring like this even while on antibiotics...must have nothing to do with infection maybe?
I don't know what to think anymore. Sigh. I keep hoping for an answer..
But anyway antibiotics haven't cured me yet...
Blessings, Lori
