Latex Allergy?

How do you know if you are allergic to the latex caths? Every time I get a cath, I have irritation and burning. Thoughts?

It might be a cranky urethra.I started taking Urelle 2 hours before the instill and would drink some baking soda water as soon as I got home. I had to "hold" the instill cocktail for an hour before peeing so I always went home to do it, "just in case" I had a problem .I only had a problem once and that was before I started taking Urelle first and the baking soda water afterwards.

The urethral burn from latex caths (even pediatric ones) made me ask my doctor to try a non-latex catheter. That eliminated the problem. I'm not officially allergic to latex, but I do get an ic flare from avocado & apparently avocado, papayas & latex are all related, so I guess it makes some kind of sense.

This week's favorite one-liner:
"I love deadlines. I especially like the whooshing sound they make as they go flying by...

New second favorite:
"And which dwarf are you?."

Adding a third because I'm just so darn easily amused...
"Eagles may soar, but weasels aren't sucked into jet engines."

Current treatments:
-IC diet
-Elavil 20mg at night
-Ditropan 5mg at night
-Continuous use birth control pills (4-5 periods/year)
-Heparin/Marcaine/Sodium Bicarb home instills every night & sometimes in the morning also
-Pyridium if needed, usually once a week or so
-1 Darvocet at bedtime,
-Flexeril 10mg at bedtime
-Dye Free Benadryl for allergies occasionally
-Pelvic floor & myofascial release (external only) physical therapy for 8 weeks, then home exercise program...
-Managing stress
-Fur therapy: Hugging the cat!

Thanks - the pharmacist is going to try to get me some in the morning. I also get these bumps going down the insides of my thighs for a couple of days after. Since I am now going to be doing weekly at home instills, I want to avoid any more problems. I have never been known to be allergic, but I guess there is a first time.........Having a bad week already, so what's one more thing on my plate? Ugh
