Ok, is this a coincidence or is there something to this?
Ok, is this a coincidence or could there be something to this?
I bought a bag of ginger candies at Trader Joe's ("ginger chews" by the Ginger People) & finally got up the nerve to try them.
No flare and in fact, my bladder has been much better. I'm actually surprised I didn't flare because they're pretty spicy! Since I started eating a few of these per day, my bladder has been feeling pretty good. Is this a fluke or....
Is there any connection between ginger and IC improvement?
Or is the improvement because I had a bad cold last week & I've noticed before that when I have a cold, my bladder usually improves. (A mystery to me. I've asked my doctors about it & all they say is "weird" - which always makes me want to ask for my copay back! I never do, but just the thought of asking cracks me up!)
Any ideas?
I'm gonna keep eating them anyhow because they're really good

I don't know. But sounds good to me. I like Ginger and may get me some. I have noticed that when I'm sick like month ago I had the H1n1 and my bladder did not bother me at all. Maybe I was to sick to even care

EGADS! I just bought some ginger candies. The ones I got are shaped like little bears and definitely very spicy --- even though they have the texture of gummy bears, I will suck on them in the future. I bit into my first one and almost hit the ceiling!
It didn't bother my bladder though.

I tried those same ginger chews from Trader Joes too, back when I was much more food sensitive than I am now. They were pretty spicy but didn't bother my bladder a bit. A guilty pleasure in a sea of bland food is how I felt. The idea of a respiratory virus alleviating IC symptoms has intrigued me. Could there be another reason for your respite, like missing a day of work or resting more? Special chicken soup cures?

Hi,
Isn't ginger a natural inflammatory?

For some reason I was under the assumption that ginger was not IC friendly so I never would try anything with ginger in it. I guess I was wrong, I'm not sure where I got that info from. I might give a little bit a try sometime then. Thanks!

Pelvic pain began July 2008. Urinary frequency began in November of 2008.
Cystoscopy showed evidence of glomerulations on the bladder.
Main symptoms: Frequency mostly. Also some mild to moderate pain. Completed 8 months of physical therapy.
Currently on: IC Diet, Elavil (30mg), Elmiron since June '09 (500mg/day), Hydroxyzine (50mg), Cystoprotek, DH Aloe, Alesse Birth Control to regulate hormones, and Flowmax. I also just started PTNS. I have done 4 of 12 weekly sessions.
Previously tried and quit: one series of six instillations, Neurontin, Ditropan, Oxytrol, electric stimulation to the pelvic floor.

It's on the "try it" list. When I first tried it 6 years ago, ginger bothered me, but now I'm having a little more leeway with my food. Nothing wild, but I can now drink mild peppermint & chamomile teas. I can now have blackberries & honeydew, which I also couldn't have before. I'm not in remission, but I'm much better.

Kadi,
Thanks for sharing!! Sometimes it helps to share a specific item that works
for you and just may for someone else - esp. knowing you are very diet sensitive. I am just going to have to make a trader joes trip and get some to try! I love any ginger cookies, etc. I am trying to decide if I try my yummy, chewy ginger cookies I always made at this time of year....maybe a couple
of bites and see what happens. I had a little tiny piece of pumpkin pie
at my sisters a couple of weeks ago and that had ginger in it and I did fine.
Thought you might like knowing your tip with the cozy shack rice pudding
working for you was great - I tried it and am now totally hooked, not good for the diet, but yummy! I also mix it half and half with cottage cheese and that is really good too and a bit more healthy.
Your posts are always great - thanks for taking the time to do that!!!

Hi Holly,
Thanks for the kind words. Did I mention that I mix shredded coconut (from the health food store, so no sulfites in it) with the Kozy Shak rice pudding & sometimes add a few raisins too? Or I mix a few raisins & cinnamon in it to make it more interesting
Cheers,
Kadi
