Question for Atarax users....
Hi,
For any of you Atarax users, how soon before you noticed it was having a positive effect on your IC? My daughter has been on it for a couple of weeks, but it seemed like I noticed a difference after a week possibly...maybe I'm crazy Any feedback would be greatly appreciated
Thanks,
Jill

I noticed an improvement the first night that I took an antihistamine. That was benadryl but now I'm on Hydroxyzine (same thing as atarax). I've read studies on it and they say it takes four months to reach it's full potential, but I definitely felt a bit better after only hours. It stops the mast cells from secreting all of that bad stuff like histamines that cause inflammation.

Pelvic pain began July 2008. Urinary frequency began in November of 2008.
Cystoscopy showed evidence of glomerulations on the bladder.
Main symptoms: Frequency mostly. Also some mild to moderate pain. Completed 8 months of physical therapy.
Currently on: IC Diet, Elavil (30mg), Elmiron since June '09 (500mg/day), Hydroxyzine (50mg), Cystoprotek, DH Aloe, Alesse Birth Control to regulate hormones, and Flowmax. I also just started PTNS. I have done 4 of 12 weekly sessions.
Previously tried and quit: one series of six instillations, Neurontin, Ditropan, Oxytrol, electric stimulation to the pelvic floor.

I am on it for close to a month now but not sure if it does anything for me. Maybe the dose its not big enough, 20mg. I saw my uro today and she was surprised to hear that my ND would give me that for bladder (well the truth is I asked for it since we do not have other meds here only atarax and wanted to try at least something). I am not sure what to do, to continue or not since I did not notice any big difference

Marshmallow root

I've been on it 16 years. It does not do anything for my IC. I wish it did.
I take it for itching. I can have 100 mg's 3 times aday if I need to.

Thanks ladies for the replies Musiclover, based on your experience, maybe it's possible I've seen a difference for my daughter already...
Thanks so much,
Jill

Jill,
It's very possible that you haave noticed a difference. I think sometimes your body does start getting used to it and you have to use more of it.
Bo,
It sounds like who ever you saw just doesn't know a lot about IC. I'd say the 20mgs just isn't enough. I started out on 50mgs at night and now I take 100mgs or more.
It's great for anxiety too!
hugs and blessings

I can have up to 300 mg's daily of Atarax.
I sure wish it did help my IC. If it did , I might not be in this present mess , or atleast not as bad.
I really hope it helps you ladies though. It's a great anti histamine.
