Calling all MED Students! :)
Hey all you nursing/med students....wanted to pick your brain a bit....
Is a person's esophagus right below their breastbone in the center of their chest? Is that right where the esophagus meets the top of the stomach.
Is there also a major chest muscle in that spot?
I'm trying to figure out exactly what's there....the diagrams online are a bit unclear...
thank you! thank you! thank you!

Yes, The esophagus connects to the stomache. The diaphragm is in that area...that's the muscle that helps you breathe..
Definition of Diaphragm
The muscle that separates the chest (thoracic) cavity from the abdomen. The diaphragm is the main muscle of respiration. Contraction of the diaphragm muscle expands the lungs during inspiration when one is breathing air in. We rely heavily on the diaphragm for our respiratory function so that when the diaphragm is impaired, it can compromise our breathing.

thanks you! :-)
OK. So given that....I'm wondering If I've got some sort of new heartburn going on.....it feels like an incredibly painful tight, pulled muscle...it usually happens while I'm sleeping and its painful to flip myself over (in bed). It doens't happen all the time...but it does happen and it sucks.
I also found drinking water makes it go subside somewhat. I'm guessing some sort of hearburn, acid reflux thing or possibly linked to not drinking enough water.......
I am so sick of gastrointestinal crapola

If it's heartburn, that means the pyloric sphincter isn't closing properly allowing acid from the stomach to go up into the esphogus...that can either burn or hurt....there are some OTC things you can try to see if they help...Tums before bed, chew 2...if you can't take those try Gaviscon ...chew 2 and drink some water with them...raise the head of your bed 4 inches....don't eat or drink anything after 8:00 pm...if none of these things help see your dr...

Yvette,
Does an old fuddy duddy nurse count? Yes, the esophagus is below your breast bone, or sternum. I just wanted to add to Lesa's info that there are major muscle groups in that area to include the pectoralis major and minor, the sternoclidomastiod in the front, and the lattisimus dorsi to the backside.
Hugs,
Barb

Babs RN: of course a seasoned nurse counts
It still is "sore" now that I've gotten up and showered and moved around a bit...I've taken my 'pain" med for diverticulosis, maybe it will help that too (?)....good grief I'm falling apart.
I'll try the tums and being propped up...altho sleeping on my belly helps my IC and the belly/IBS pain I've been having. I just can't catch a break
