Smile Carafate and Two Great Days

I have acid reflux and was just put on Carafate to stop the burning in my throat and mouth. It is a med for treating the symptoms of ulcers. I have had two great bladder days. Has anyone ever taken this med? I take the liquid form. It is too early to credit this with my relief from frequency, but it would be nice if it helps. I do have Hunner's ulcers so my bladder lining is very compromised. Ratchada

Hi Ratchada

I have not heard of this medicine, but I talked to an alternate doctor once, and he mentioned that the stomach and bladder effect one another somehow, but of course he didn't get into great detail. It amazes me when I here that someone who has taken an ulcer med has had relief in the bladder. I wonder what the connection is and how it effects the bladder exactly. I hate that we have these things happen but with no exact explanation of why. Drives me crazy!! Could it be that it puts a coating down, and how would it survive the stomach acid? Does anyone know anything about this? Like Cytotec I guess.

My thought is that it is coating the bladder in some way as well, as you wrote, but I have no way to know this. Just a few doses has helped my throat dramatically, so who knows. There is always hope!

I have taken this for the same thing -- stomach problems -- and I don't really recall how it affected my bladder -- although it was only within the last year that I used it... I had been given too much motrin 800 for way too long and it caused some real stomach problems for me -- ending in a surgery to put out the fires... then the carafe -- then I have used something else now for a while and haven't needed it anymore... Would be interesting to find out if it does help the bladder though...

I know it coats the stomach... that's all I really remember... hope others chime in that have taken it -- wouldn't it be wonderful to know it helps a flare!!!

I thought I would mention I heard of an over the counter extract (of orange peel I think) that you take for 10 days, every other day and it coats the throat because it is lighter than water. Has anyone heard of it.?I wonder if it would coat the bladder. I might try it some day. PV

I've finished one year of herbal study. Yeah! For the most part, herbs are much safer than RX drugs, but sometimes we just need the immediate strength and drastic actions of a drug.

I had to stop instills of heparin because it was hurting to much to do (after I peed it out it hurt for a day or two and no improvement. I may try lo-fric catheters). I am going to try valium suppositories.

At the moment I try to take Planetary Formulas msm/glucosimine with herbs, sialic acid, barley grass, Life Extension multi, vitamin K and mixed E's and CoQ10, calcium and other minerals, an elderberry extract, probiotics, chlorella, fish oil, and bed-time tea with valerian sometimes. If I feel I am getting a cold I take American ginseng, Yin Chiao (classic chinese anti-cold formula), and andrographis paniculata- - so far these three have stopped 2 colds from developing and they never bother my bladder - they seem to actually help but that could be coincidental. I've had some better days punctuated by flares I think from real tea or chai or green tea (yes I cheat). It sounds like a lot of pills but I usually can't take all these pills every day so I don't.

I took this, and it didn't do much for me, and I have no idea how it would effect the bladder. I burped orange all the time!!! It's for acid reflux. I bought it at Wild Oats.

Carafate

I was taking carafate (pills ) 1 hr before taking Elmiron to avoid heartburn, but now since I stopped Elmiron I stopped carafate. I stil have a bunch of pills and will use it if I needed for my stomach. Carafate or Sulcrafate is a stomach coat. I didn't know it could affect the bladder but if it coates the stomach, tehn it my reduce all the acid activity in the stomach....and sometimes excess acid in the stomach can go to the bladder and affect the bladder. I don't think carafate goes to the bladder directly. It may be more like an "inderect effect".
