Kidney stone - Home from the hospital
Went to the emergecy room last night with the most excruciating pain in the right side of my back and right pelvic area. I've had numerous kidny stones over the years, so I pretty much knew what was causing the pain even though I wanted to be in denial about it. When I was throwing up from the pain, I knew it was of to the ER for me. I couldn't sit, stand or lay any way to help relieve the pain. They gave me Dilauda for the pain, the first shot helped some but only for about an hour and I think all that the other shots of Dilauda they gave me just added to making me more nasuea and throwing up. I was able to pee when I first got to the ER but then all of the sudden I knew I had to pee and I couldn't. I tried twice and nothing would come out and I felt like my kidney was going to explode. They put a foley in for me then. After about 4 hrs.,blood work and a CT scan they said I had a kidney stone that was about 9 millimeters, which means it's a pretty big stone and it sure wasn't going to pass on it's own. They finally started giving me shots of Demerol for the pain which eventually helped in keeping the pain somewhat under control. They admitted me about 3am this morning. Today they went in through the bladder and all and used a laser to break up the stone so that it will be in smaller pieces and I should be able to pass them. They inserted a stent to keep the ureter open so it wouldn't close from the swelling and all. So now 24 hrs. later I'm back home! Over all, right now, I'm not feeling to bad. Could it be all the anesthesia and pain meds. in me? I would definately think so. I can tell where the stent is but right now I don't have the terrible burning pain in my bladder that I always have and that sure is a relief for me. Not sure how I will be feeling tomorrow after these meds. are out of my system but right now I'm just sitting here enjoying not to be feeling the pain of my IC. The doctors weren't sure how all of this will affect my IC in the next couple of days, so I will just have to wait and see. I was so glad that they left the foley in until they took me to surgery today because it stopped me from constantly waking up and having to get up and move to go potty. Well it's off to bed for me now and a couple of days of taking things real slow and easy.

I'm feeling pretty tender and sore in my pelvic area today. I can tell that there is quite a bit a swelling in there. What does everyone think about doing my DMSO instill on Monday? I'm thinking it may not be a good idea and that it will hurt even more than it normally does.

I'm sorry about the stone : (
DMSO can cause some to a lot of discomfort, mainly burning, for most ICers so if you feel that you don't want to handle withstanding anymore pain, for the time being, it might be a good idea to postpone it until you're kidnety stone problem is healed

Hi Karen10300:
I hope you're feeling better! I agree with others that you should probably reschedule your DMSO treatment; it may send you into another flare.
Are you taking any medication to avoid the kidney stones? I know that some IC patients take Urocit-K® to help make their urine less acidic and prevent burning; it seems works very well for them. However, Urocit-K® is actually FDA approved to prevent kidney stones.
I suggest that you consult with your healthcare provider if you believe that the information above may be helpful; your healthcare provider will determine the appropriate treatment regimen for you.

I did cancel my DMSO instill for Monday. I just couldn't imagine putting that in my bladder right now. I know there are more open areas inside me somewhere ,probably from the insertion of the stent, because of all the blood I passed yesterday. I think I will call the doctor who lazered the kindey stone and inserted the stent to see what he thinks about having the DMSO a week from this Monday, since the stent will stil be in there. I'm also going to ask them about the Urocit-K. I've had numerous kidney stones for the last 20 yrs., but when they crush them & analyze them they don't come up with what causes me to have them.

Best wishes on your recovery! It's worth asking about the Urocit-K®; it may end up helping your kidney and IC.

2nd cystoscopy 10/6/06 confirms I DO have IC! 3 out of 4 urologists agree ... It's not in my head!
9/11/06 Urodynamic results - bladder wont hold more than 200cc without causing retention due to lack of strength in bladder to start urine flow.
5/3/06 had IVP that revealed "mild swelling" of right kidney and ureter due to "recurrent infections or urine backup into kidney"
4/13/07 - started RMSO once a week for six weeks - ON HOLD DUE TO INFECTION!!! Scheduled to start again 5/4/07.
Past meds:
Elmiron - severe nausea
