    Urethra Stretching Advices. Please Help!

    Hi all,

I have been battling the urgency/urination on and off for the last 6 weeks. I now have terrible urgency (every 15 min.), but there is little urine. I have been seen by a urologist, who performed office cystoscopy, potassium test and cystometrogram. All tested indicated no IC or bladder cancer. However, he observed that I have a tight urethra, which may be in spasm. He believed that most of my urgencies may had caused by urethra spasm. Is that possible? Has anyone who experienced that?

I am very desperated and depressed now. I need to get this urgency feeling reduced. Some of the medications that I have been taking is Detrol LA, which seem to make my symptoms worse. He just prescribed me Flomax. Do you think it would reduce my urgency feeling. I am thinking about having the urethra stretching procedure done. Is it worth it? Do you think it would help? Has anyone received an urethra stretching? If so, did it help? Finally, has anyone tried messagging the urethra tract via the upper vagina wall. My urelogist think that it may help.

Thank you! Looking forward to your replies!

    Hi LittleQ,

I'm on Flomax right now, and can honestly say it helps me. I had trouble fully emptying my bladder because the muscles at the bladder neck are tight. The Flomax helps me urinate on my own again without having to catheterize myself, which is great. I still need to cath occasionally during IC flares, but the Flomax is pretty good stuff.

Good luck with it, i hope it helps you as well!

*Kept trying a million different treatments for all these things until I found what works, and I am doing okay these days with the help of a cocktail of medications and the InterStim, which was first placed in 2007. [I have had 2 revisions - one in 2010 when my battery died and had to be replaced, and one complete replacement (lead and generator) in 2012 after a fall on my stairs caused my lead to move.]
*Current meds include Atarax (50mg at night), Lyrica (150mg twice a day), Xanax (0.5mg at night and as needed), Zanaflex (4mg at night), hydrocodone (10/325, every 6 hours as needed), Advair, Nasonex, Singulair (10mg at night), oral contraceptives, home instills containing Elmiron and Marcaine (as often as I need to do them).

There are several different medications that will help relax the urethral muscles so you can urinate easier. If it were me, I would try the medication route before going on to any other treatment options.

    Hi Donna,

What medications would you recommend? So far, I have been on Pyridium and Detrol LA. And the Detrol LA is terrible for me. I felt like it shut down my bladder or something because the urgency is very strong, but I can not pee or very little urine after sitting for 2 minutes. I was taken doxycycline at the same time as the pyridium.

Your words are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I honestly am not qualified to make a recommendation. My husband has taken Flomax and hytrin and found hytrin best for him. Others find the Flomax works best. There's another that I'm familiar with --- cardura. I took cardura for high blood pressure for while, but stopped it after it caused my urethra to relax too much. I don't have a problem urinating so the cardura wasn't a good choice for me.

I suggest you talk to your doctor about trying something different. It may take more than one try to find the best option for you.

I would diffently say no for the dilation... My mom and I both have IC, She had IC before they knew what it was, and, did the urethra dilation, it had caused more pain and scaring around the urethia and did nothing to help her urgency.... Another name and it totally fits is urethra rape... I would try every pill there is before I tried that....
    hugs and best wishes

Hey littleQ- My advice to you is get another opinion. I was diagnosed
with atypical ic. Doctors in LIJ like Dr Moldwin in the ic handbook say that 40% of patients of patients tested for ic have symptoms of ic yet show no physical features . You need a specialist. Take pyridine to numb your urethra. The E-Stim is also helpful for me. I'm not a doctor but go to
other doctors and you will see a variety of opinions. Trust me I have been through so much this year. I must have seen at least 10 doctors. But you know your body. Here is a link to LIJMC - http://www.lij.edu/lij_homepage_ns.html. You can look up the interstitial cystitis center as well as info on Dr Moldwin theories on atypical ic. Please remember I am not a doctor but I will tell your that what ever I have Elmiron,
    helped me with the urgency.

    Good Luck, NINA

    Just a thought....

Detrol LA made things much worse for me too...one of it's side effects is urine retention which doesn't make sense to prescribe it without first checking to see if someone is retaining urine. It took about 8 days for me to get back to what I was before I started on it. I use Cardura, effective but side effects are tough for some people. Hope things get better for you...
