The travel johns are small enough to carry one in a purse. It's difficult to describe them. They are a plastic unit with a fold-up plastic bag attached and tucked inside the plastic. When you use one, you pull the plastic bag out so it is hanging from the molded plastic unit --- which is shaped to be held in position so a female can urinate into the bag. You hold it against yourself so the urine doesn't leak out. The bag contains an absorbent material so the urine doesn't slosh around. I use a tissue afterwards and just tuck it in the bag too.

Has anyone used a travel john in a line in a public washroom. My concern is that there are often only 2 stalls and a huge line up; if a person cannot wait can they use one in line? I am planning to travel and some of the senior ladies use the men's room; I being much younger am much too embarassed to do so since I feel that would be more embarassing than using a travel john in a ladies' room. It is not 'in public' per se since it is a washroom with people of the same gender? I believe that anyone in the medical field would understand if one simply said sorry but I have a medical condition (assuming that nobody would let the bladder-challenged person ahead of them in line). Could one be charged with 'indecent exposure' although virtually nothing is exposed? People of the same gender walk around nude in locker rooms (ladies in the ladies locker room and men in the men's locker room), so in my mind this is not such a big deal. If I take a tour with 50 or so women plus about 10 men (usual ratio), the line up for the women's room is horrendous. Any advice? I've been caught short and had to use a freshette before for maximum coverage, but I've never used a travel john in bathroom line-ups. It appears to be hygienic since one could throw it in the garbage after use, then wash one's hands.

I've never tried using one in line at a restroom. My usual spot is either in the car or behind a bush at the coast! I guess if you wore a dress, you could probably get away with it okay --- you might raise a few eyebrows, but I don't think that's important.
