Quick introduction...
I've been lurking on and off for months now and thought I'd introduce myself. While I've not been "officially" diagnosed, I have all of the symptoms and very much believe IC is my problem. Bummer!
I'm a 35 year old mother of a five year old and live in rural Mass. My troubles began last year with a nearly five month giant flare and major depression along with it. After that, I went into a total remission for nearly five months. I could eat anything I wanted--it was wonderful. Then I got a real UTI early this spring and it sent me right back into a flare that's been coming and going for nearly three months. I'm tired of it!!!!
I've learned SO MUCH from this board. THANK YOU! I follow the diet quite religiously and have found that much of the time I can get by with the diet and my tool kit of xanax for spasms (.25 mgs usually works, .5 puts me to sleep!) and pyridium (not usually needed but comes in handy when flaring!).
Thankfully, I have continued to work and can keep my flares fairly managable, but boy when it acts up I can get pretty miserable and grumpy. Like today!
In fact, I've had a flare for the past few days and haven't been able to figure out if it's a UTI, something I ate, or a result of trying to go on the birth control patch. The flare started five days after putting on my first patch. Just had the doctor run a urinalysis and culture this afternoon so I'll find out in an hour. We just moved to Mass. this past year and thankfully, my doctors (including a female urologist) are wonderful! Bless them.mom_in_ma

Ugh...it's a flare.
@#$#...it's a flare and not a UTI. Just talked to the doctor. While there's a bit of blood, there's no evidence of infection. He's putting me on levequin just in case because of the trace blood. BUT, I just have to wait this one out. Ok...now I'm REALLY grumpy!

Oh, no... yeah, I know how you feel... sometimes I wish it were a UTI so I could be sure I'd feel better after a couple days of antibiotics....
I hope your flare goes away soon!!
And...
to the boards, glad you decided to start posting!!

*Also diagnosed with PFD, fibromyalgia, chronic myofascial pain, IBS, migraines, allergies/asthma, dermatographism
*Kept trying a million different treatments for all these things until I found what works, and I am doing okay these days with the help of a cocktail of medications and the InterStim, which was first placed in 2007. [I have had 2 revisions - one in 2010 when my battery died and had to be replaced, and one complete replacement (lead and generator) in 2012 after a fall on my stairs caused my lead to move.]
*Current meds include Atarax (50mg at night), Lyrica (150mg twice a day), Xanax (0.5mg at night and as needed), Zanaflex (4mg at night), hydrocodone (10/325, every 6 hours as needed), Advair, Nasonex, Singulair (10mg at night), oral contraceptives, home instills containing Elmiron and Marcaine (as often as I need to do them).

Me, too - such a bummer when it isn't a UTI causing the flare.

Welcome to the site - glad you came out of lurkdom.
Kim
Diagnosed August 2001
Current IC meds: Elmiron (since 2001), Levaquin (one pill after intercourse to prevent UTIs), Effexor (for depression & anxiety)
Past IC meds: Amitriptyline (Elavil), Hydroxyzine (Vistaril), Detrol LA, Lexapro (for depression & anxiety, but also helped my IC) (They all helped, but I was able to discontinue them.)
My IC story: http://www.ic-network.com/patientstories/kim.html It's very outdated now. I've been virtually symptom free and able to eat & drink whatever I'd like for about 8 years now.
