Which doctor prescribes pain meds?

For those of you on pain medications, are you getting them from your Uro? I am talking about vicodin, percocet, etc. I am finding I need something for when I am in a flare. Elavil doesn't even touch the pain.

i get my pain medicine from my uro doctor matter of fact i'm on a pain contract that protect me and my doctor.

My uro refused so my primary doctor writes my pain script for me.

I am on oxycontin 20mg with oxycodone for break through pain. It is prescribed by my uro.

Sometimes it's the doctor who know you best who is willing to prescribe for your pain. I've been seeing the same primary care doc and the same uro for something like thirty years and I have to say it's my uro who is more willing to prescribe for my IC pain. I don't take pain meds full time so it might be I would need to see a pain specialist if that were the case.

I am now seeing a Doctor in the pain management clinic.He's great. He finally put me on methadone,and so far I'm thrilled with the results.My uro didnt want to, which is dind of weird,but my family doc and my doc. from pain mgt. are in touch and are helping a great deal! Hope this helps.From what I hear a lot of times uro's won't or don't give pain meds,not sure why.Good luck!

I get my pain meds from my Nurse practitioner, and my urologist is in agreement with her. I am on Ultram when needed, and so far it has helped me. I was on stronger meds right after my diagnosis, but came off after a while, and switched to Ultram. Hugs Iris.

My urologist prescribes my pain meds for me, but I have a new gynecologist who I just saw for the first time 2 weeks ago... I told him about my IC and my uro (who he knows, it turns out), and he said he was willing to work with me on it too if my uro was ever unreachable in a pinch.

Thank you all for the replies. That is a big help to see the different responses. I have an appt. with my Uro in a couple of weeks. I am hoping he will be willing to prescribe something for pain. My primary doctor has very little understanding of IC. Last time I saw him he couldn't understand why Elmiron wouldn't help me, since it is an FDA treatment for IC. I would just rather not get him involved in my bladder problems. With my other body parts, he is wonderful!

Thank you again. It is so great to be able to get good info between my dr. appts. I don't know what I would do without you all. That is the honest truth.

My Uro prescribed me Lortab but wouldnt give anything stronger than that. I get my oxycontin from a pain doctor at a pain management clinic where I am under a pain contract. Thank the Gods for him!

I get my pain meds from my primary Doc, my uro doesn't like to give pain meds. I can't believe how Docs can tell us they can't or won't give us pain meds, that's not fair! I would love to give the doubters and Docs 1 day to walk in our shoes & I bet they'd be prescribing pain meds real quick! Thank god for my primary Doc. He said he's only had 1 other person he's written demerol for! I take demerol 50 mg every 6 hours and lortab 10/500 for breakthrough pain. Everyone @ my walgreens pharmacy knows me! That's sick! I'm only 30, I take more meds than my 84 year old grandma. Thank god I have a Doc that cares. He says how can they leave you in pain like this? He says don't they have any compassion? Obviously not. When you find a good Doc you stay with them. They're hard to find now a days!

Maybe some one could answer my question. I've had IC for
11years. Most of the treatments didn't help me. Couldn't hold
DMSO for ten minutes. Elmiron caused bleeding in my colon.
To make a long story short my bladder has shrunk to the size
of a two year old. At this stage of my disease I just have to
live with the frequency ( 40 t0 50 times in a 24 hour period)
However the pain which is mostly ureatheal and the whole
perianuam area including rectum has gotten much worse.
My primary care doctor has been prescribing Demerol 50mg
The concern I have is it's gotten to the point I'm taking it much
more frequently than before. I was wondering if perhaps any-
one is on something for everyday pain that is not as strong
and addictive? Would really appreciate any input. Thank you

Four 1/2 years ago when my IC started, I also had terrible asthma and spinal pain. So much was going on at once. It seemed that one day I was normal & healthy, and the next day my life changed. I was seeing multiple drs and getting several meds. I was so embaressed to show up at the pharmacy, that I started going to different pharmacies. My mother finally told me to never do that. Its important for one Pharmacist to know all that I am taking. So, I have learned to swallow my pride and stand up tall when I pick up my meds. But better yet, I use a mail order for most of them so I don't even have to see them ever! :thumbsup:

Now, after all this time, I don't think too much of it. It is such a part of my life....the pain, the meds, the boring diet, lack of sleep, etc. Some days I laugh and some days I cry!

I'm just so thankful I have all of you because the people I see everyday just don't get it.

Sorry this reply isn't in May when you wrote. You asked if anyone found a med. that helped so they didn't have to take a gazillion meds. My answer is YES, my pain dr. who I just started seeing in May started me on neurontin 300 mg. 3x day, he adjusts dose up or down according to how I react and what it does or doesn't do.
it's a med for chronic pain suffers. For instance, I alwayss have sharp stabbing pain and have been unable to leave my home for months and have migraines 3-5x wk. Neurontin has helped ease sharp pain a little so I can get out a little and I now only have migraines 1or 2x month. After 19 mos. of ic I sure wish I'd been prescribed sooner, much sooner. I'm lucky this works for me, I understand it doesn't work for everyone. When he increased my dose 400mg. 4x day, zombie, out of it all the time, yet others take much higher dose.

I sure do hope you're finding some relief and hope this may help you.

Thanks Julie! I'm glad to hear neurontin is working for you. My brother in law gets migraines also, and it works well for him. I was going to a pain center a couple of years ago (for spinal pain, not IC) and was prescribed neurontin. I never got to a high enough dose which may have helped me. I just didn't like the way I felt on it.

I have since been given something for my IC pain through my Uro. I just called him one day and he gave me something over the phone. I was thankful it was that easy.
