    Urologist Near Nashville, TN

    I am Minnie,

Have posted here before, I am currently being treated for IC in
Arkansas. I am moving close to Nashville in a couple of months,
looking for a urologist in Nashville, TN. If someone can help me out I would appreciate it. My symptoms are urgency/frequency I don't have the pain. Any suggestions what med's I can take to calm the urgency/frequency.

    Appreciate any and all comments.

I know we have an ICN member "littlemyrn" who lives in that area. She has posted that she sees Dr. Marcy Able in Nashville and has posted many positive things about her and seems to be very pleased with her. You might PM her for more information about her. Also there is a Directory of recommended Drs on the ICN, but I am not sure of the link. (Hopefully, someone else will come along and post it.) Also, you might ask your Dr. if he knows anyone in that area. You'd be quite suprised by how often they do, as they may have gone to school with someone or may have been in the military with someone who is now practicing in another city.

As for the freq/urg issues, I dont know if you have tried the meds such as Vesicare or Detrol LA. Many ICers are helped greatly by those kinds of meds, however, others (like me) have found that they work TOO WELL, causing retention. However, you never know if something will work for YOU or not, until you give it a try. Right now, I take Urimar-T for that. It is one of those meds that turns your urine blue. Though you said you dont have pain, and didnt mention bladder spasms as a symptom, it also helps with that, as it contains an antispasmodic and smooth muscle relaxer. It also helps with urgency and frequency. It also contains something that alters the urine PH which helps prevent bacteria from sticking to the bladder wall, thus helping to prevent UTIs. This is particularly helpful for ICers who get post coital Utis.

Although more effective if taken daily, this med can also be taken as needed. There are many other meds that are similar to this one. Please ask your Dr. about them as well as the meds like Detrol LA and Vesicare, if you havent tried them yet.

Hopefully, someone who lives in that area will see your post and reply or pm you. Wish I could help you more!

    Sincerely,
    Amaranthe

I feel a lot of tingling in the bladder also, my urologist told me that was my nerves firing up. I am on Enablex 15 mg, Heparin instills one a week for the next 6 weeks & Atarax 50 mg 2x a day. He just put me on this today. Thanks,

    Hey Minnie,

I live in Nashville. While I am very happy with my urologist, he doesn't specialize in IC.

However, I have a Nurse Practitioner who oversees my instills (with another uro group), and she takes care of a lot of IC patients in Nashville. And, she is truly wonderful! I am not sure of the name of the urologist she works with, but I have never had to find out--she takes patients independently of the uro.

    Her name is:
    Brooke Faught, RN, MSN, APN

Here is her website with contact info.:
    http://www.wishnashville.com/meet_brooke.html

(Her website doesn't mention IC specifically, but she told me she is in the process of updating it!)

If you have any other questions about living in Nashville, just let me know. If you want my email, just Private Message me (just click on my name BT2008 and the drop down bar will prompt you to send me a PM).

You will really like Brooke a lot. I can't imagine someone not liking her!

Hit with severe pelvic pain on 6/14/08 (7:05pm): GYN, MRI, CT, laparoscopy, colonoscopy: All Clear
DX'ed with Severe IC: Findings during cystoscopy and hydro-distention on 9/11/08 showed: scattered areas of hemorrhage and glomerulizations, w/bloody efflux. Update: Had second cysto/hydro on 5/21/09: My uro said "there were thousands of lesions" all over my bladder.
Current Meds: Bladder Instills (self-adm 3 x per week or PRN); MS Contin; Lortab (PRN); Zanaflex; Maxide; Estradiol Patch
Other helpful remedies: IC Diet (very important!) especially no chemical additives or preservatives; Drink 1.5+ gal. of pH neutral water per day (I test my water frequently! This is very, very important!!); Prelief; Heating pad; and lots of hugs from my wonderful hubby!
Meds I have tried, but could not take: Amitriptyline & Imipramine (both made me mentally nutzoid, gave me nightmares, and neither one touched the pain); Lyrica (didn't touch the pain either, plus it made me very nauseous after eating and then it triggered my IBS); Cymbalta (didn't touch the pain either and it made me horribly depressed--all I did was sleep and cry!); Percocet (did very little for the pain and gave me headaches); Discontinued using Sodium Bicarb & Kenalog in my instills (it burned really bad!).
Discontinued Meds: Elmiron (replaced by Heparin in instills); Bentyl (antispasmodic and anticholinergic; Zanaflex works much better for me!); Valium Suppositories
History: IBS (spastic colon) since 1982; Partial hysterectomy 1985--completed in 2002 with extensive adhesion removal (I think this surgery was my IC trigger!); Non-painful urinary frequency since 2002; No history of frequent UTI's; HPV and abnormal paps 1/07; Sporadic PFD

    Hey Minnie (again!)

I just looked it up, and Dr. Marcy Abel is in the same group as Brooke Faught!

So--you might get the best of both...

    Here is Dr. Abel's website:

Good luck! Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with!

    Hello Beth,
I'm Minnie. I am on this website trying to figure out how to PM you. I am kind of new at this. I really appreciate you. I have already called Dr Marcy Abel's office to see if they would treat my IC. The receptionist said yes. So maybe I will meet Brooke when I go to Dr Abel in a couple of months. I got her name from another ICer on this site.

    Kind regards,

Dr. Barry Jarnigan is a urogynecologist who has a special interest in treatment of IC. His office is across the street from Cool Springs Galleria. He works with Vanderbilt. He is a friend of my urogynecologist, Dr. J. Dell in Knoxville. Although Dr. Jarnigan did not diagnose my IC he was very thorough. My gynecologist did not refer me to him for treatment of IC. Actually I was not diagnosed with IC from my presenting symptom. I also saw Dr. M. Breen in Chattanooga, head of the department of gynecology for the University of TN campus in Cahttanooga.

I lived in the middle of a triangle between Nashville, Chattanooga, and Knoxville so it doesn't really matter where I go to see a specialist I have to drive 90 miles. I just use it as an excuse to go on a shopping trip. If you really wanted to see an "IC nut" I would highly recommend Dr. Dell ( he is listed on this site as a MD in TN specializing in treatment of IC). There is a link to his web site in my signature. He is so companionate you would think he had IC. He is very diligent in finding a treatment that works.

Dr. Dell has done an incredible amount of research with IC. He is a sought after presenter for national and international conferences about IC. You wouldn't believe the number of publications he has done.

    Hey Minnie

I just wanted to give you a quick update. I went to see Brooke Faught yesterday, and due to the fact that my options are more and more limited all the time, she now wants me to see Dr. Marcy Abel! Ironic, huh?

According to Brooke, she is an excellent physician/surgeon and is very involved with IC patients here in Nashville. Also, 80% of her patients are women. (In my uro's office, I am one of the few females sitting in the waiting room, other than wives/girlfriends/nurses!)

Again, I am not unhappy with my urologist--so far he is the only one I have seen, other than Brooke, who "gets it." But, Brooke wants me to see Dr. Abel because she is open to surgical options that my uro doesn't recommend. Since I don't like the idea of living on narcotics for the rest of my life, I have been thinking about getting a second opinion on surgical options anyway.

So, I went ahead and made an appt with Dr. Abel (scheduled for May 27th). I will let you know more after that. I may PM you, so -- have you figured out the PM system yet?

    ~Beth
