Long term use of Aloe Vera
I just started using DS Aloe Vera and it definitly took the edge off my symptoms, I just worry about how long I can use it. I was looking on the Mayo clinic and read this
Im scared now!Use for over seven days may cause dependency or worsening of constipation after the aloe is stopped. Ingestion of aloe for over one year has been reported to increase the risk of colorectal cancer. Individuals with severe abdominal pain, appendicitis, ileus (temporary paralysis of the bowel), or a prolonged period without bowel movements should not take aloe. There is a report of hepatitis (liver inflammation) with the use of oral aloe.
Electrolyte imbalances in the blood, including low potassium levels, may be caused by the laxative effect of aloe. This effect may be greater in people with diabetes or kidney disease. Low potassium levels can lead to abnormal heart rhythms or muscle weakness. People with heart disease, kidney disease, or electrolyte abnormalities should not take aloe by mouth. Healthcare professionals should watch for changes in potassium and other electrolytes in individuals who take aloe by mouth for more than a few days.
Aloe taken by mouth may lower blood sugar levels. Caution is advised in patients with diabetes or hypoglycemia, and in those taking drugs, herbs, or supplements that affect blood sugar. Serum glucose levels may need to be monitored by a healthcare professional, and medication adjustments may be necessary. People with thyroid disorders, kidney disease, heart disease, or electrolyte abnormalities should also use oral aloe only under medical supervision.

HI there,
I would talk to your dr about it. But I have been taking aloe vera on and off for years... (for a few years at a time) and it seemed to help everything I had.
But I would double check with your dr.
Sending hugs,
KH

it would be interesting to know what form of aloe the Mayo site was talking about. If you are talking the aloe in pill form from Desert Harvest, they take out the parts of the plant that have the effect of a laxitive, so maybe thats also the part that causes the problems. I wondered this because of the quote saying "cause dependency or worsening of constipation after the aloe is stopped"--thats usually something that is said in reference to a laxative.

I also drink aloe vera juice now and then, as i've heard about many aloe vera juice benefits, but I suppose it does have some side effects just like any other natural remedy. That's why you shouldn't exceed the recommended daily dose, and I wouldn't drink it on a regular basis, only several times a month for example.

Desert Harvest does not have any of the laxative properties of regular aloe. Read the info on their website.
