pass out question
Does anyone else out there ever pass out from IC? Sometimes I get a really shaky feeling throughout my body (internally, not visibly)and get bad bladder contractions, and then for some reason I pass out. Has anyone else ever heard of this or have this happen? HELP! Thanks in advance for any input!!!!

I have never heard of this related specifically to IC but I would definitely see a neurologist.
Let's help move IC research along! Do you flare when taking a prescription or non-prescription drug that may be unrelated to IC? Suspect a link between how your IC started and the medications you were taking at the time? The FDA wants to know about this so that they can investigate any possible links and make medications safer. Report IC to the FDA as a possible side effect: https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scrip...tch-online.htm
I am on the path toward remission!
Had symptoms since 11/2007
Diagnosed with Ulcerative IC on 8/6/2008 (age 25) via an office cytoscopy
My symptoms:
Urgency, Discomfort, Nocturia, 2 Hunner's ulcers visible without bladder distention, Occasional pinching pain that goes away quickly
My flare triggers:
Fermented foods and stress
IC supplements and lifestyle adjustments:
IC diet w/addl restrictions (high protein, low yeast/no fruit, low histamine)
Oil pulling with coconut oil
Candida cleanse with a Solaray product and diet
Cystoprotek
Sea buckthorn oil - 1 tbsp daily - this product helps heal wounds faster
Magnesium - helps the body produce hyaluronic acid, which is responsible for connective tissue health
Flax seed oil
Organic Manuka Honey - 2 tsp daily - heals wounds and has anti-bacterial properties
Melatonin as a sleep aid for evening flares
Stress management & positive affirmations
Bladder training
Cardio workouts 2-4x weekly
Food, exercise, medication and sleep pattern diary to identify flare triggers
Other things I tried:
Elmiron - took it for a month without side effects but decided to try natural treatments first
Elavil - drowsiness & heart palpitations
Urine pH testing - mine was in the range of 5.5 to 6.25; did not see any correlation w/flares
IgG Allergy testing by Immuno Labs - found food sensitivities
On my to-do list:
Get tested for vitamin/mineral defficiencies
Try passionflower extract for stress management

Me neither. I have had IC for 20 years and in the severe stage for the last 10. Are you on any meds that make you dizzy? Are know I have been on meds that the patient information indicates that I may get light headed when I stand up, but I have never passed out. The only time I have felt shaky is during a really intense flare, but that hasn't happened in a very long time.
Hope you find out what is going on!
Hugs, Tracey

I just remembered that there was someone on this site that said that she passed out from pain because her body had very high pain tolerance so, where most people would be in pain, she did not feel anything until she passed out.

I am not on any meds. that cause dizziness. I actually do not get dizzy. What happens is all of a sudden I feel like I am about to pass out. It always accompanies the shaky body feeling. As everyone here knows, with this IC I often get bladder contractions, so I when I get contractions, I dread that it will lead to the shaky body, pass out catastrophe. It seems to also accompany the feeling of a lot of internal swelling in the bladder area. Anyone else have this feeling?

I was getting that "I'm going to pass out feeling" and I'm sure it's from Elmiron.I was also having intense burning in lower belly and around my kidneys and would break out in a clammy feeling. The Dr. never heard of that side effect and now has me taking Elmiron with meals. So far so good.

Nottoc 4, Have you gotten that pass out thing/feeling since getting IC? I would really like to know if it changes w/ meals. I have not found that the case for me. But I can say this pass out thing occurred since IC. Thanks for the info.

Do you have any blood sugar problems? If I go too long without eating I get that passing out feeling or if I have cereal with no protein in the mornings I get that feeling. Haven't noticed it from the meds or the IC though.

What has your doctor suggested might be the cause?
Kim
Diagnosed August 2001
Current IC meds: Elmiron (since 2001), Levaquin (one pill after intercourse to prevent UTIs), Effexor (for depression & anxiety)
Past IC meds: Amitriptyline (Elavil), Hydroxyzine (Vistaril), Detrol LA, Lexapro (for depression & anxiety, but also helped my IC) (They all helped, but I was able to discontinue them.)
My IC story: http://www.ic-network.com/patientstories/kim.html It's very outdated now. I've been virtually symptom free and able to eat & drink whatever I'd like for about 8 years now.

Kathdog, It has only happened since I was diagnosed with IC in May. I started on Elmiron May 30th and from the beginning it gave me a little "sicky" feeling about an hour after taking it. No nausea or vomiting, just a sick feeling. It gradually got worse so I started takeing a water cracker with it. No help there so I started eating a few teaspoons of pudding with it. It got worse. I started having lower belly burning which at first I thought was the IC. It started to become clear that it wasn't from IC so I started emptying the contents of the Elmiron capsule into a glass of water and drinking it and still having some pudding with it. It kept getting worse and along with the burning and sick feeling I was getting clammy and then finally one morning I just almost passed out from it. I was out of town and on vacation so I just quit taking the Elmiron and every day the symptoms were less severe until they were gone after 10 days . I had an appointment with my GYN on Monday and explained it to him and he never heard of that side effect. He suggested taking the Elmiron 2x a day with meals instead of 3x a day on empty stomach. I started back on it Monday this past Monday evening and so far so good. Elmiron really helps my bladder so I really want to stay one it.
Do you experience anything like this?

Fainting is not an IC symptom. Please tell your doctor what is happening so the cause can be found and treated.

I forget what it is called, but I do believe there is a condition whereby an adrenalie rush (as you may get with severe pain) can cause some people to faint.

I have not passed out, just felt like I was going to. I really suspect that the Elmiron has irritated my intestines and I have "ulcer" like symptoms. Maybe even a little bleeding in there. If I start feeling that way again while taking Elmiron with meals,I think I will make an appointment with a Gastro...specialist.

I only started this passing out since I got IC in 2006. I have passed out twice, but have come awfully close at other times. It began before I was on Elmiron, and the symptoms have not changed since Elmiron. It occurs even if I have eaten a healthy meal. But it begins the same way: shaky feeling inside, bladder cramping, and then oh no!

kathdog-
I really think you should make an appt with your doctor to discuss this issue. Whether or not you actually faint, it does sound like you are blacking out quite frequently.
Fainting can be a sign of numerous conditions including heart arrythmias, low blood sugar, anxiety attacks, super low blood pressure, etc.
It may or may not have anything to do with IC, but as most of us with IC know, what one person experiences another doesn't, and we all are individuals with other factors that can exacerbate our pain or symptoms.
For instance, I have dilated cardiomyopathy. I take a diuretic everyday. And I've taken one for 10 years now. My bladder doesn't like the diuretic, particularly when I'm flaring already, but during the months that I had "remission", it didn't seem to cause an increase in symptoms.
Also, as a result of being in pain for so long, many of us end up with Pelvic Floor Dysfunction. According my uro, it is nothing we did wrong, and most of us don't even know we have it. What we do know is the symptoms we experience.
Please see your doctor.Sonja
