granola bars?
I have yet to find a commercial granola bar that I can eat. While I can find preservative free, organic ones, they all either have soy (very bad for my IC) or peanuts or traces of peanuts (very bad if I want to continue breathing! )
So I was wondering if anyone knew of a recipe to make your own granola bars? I saw the one for granola cereal by Bev; however, I can't get it to form into bars. I miss being able to grab something like that when I am on the run. I would be grateful for any help!

I make my own granola (but not bars) that is low fat, no oil of any kind. I use Quaker Quick & Regular, water (just a little), honey, cinnamon (if you can tolerate both of these), vanilla extract (REAL vanilla, no imitation) *or you can use butter rum or any other flavoring you like, orange is a good one too!)and carob chips I mix in at the very end while its cooling.
4 cups oats ( I use 1/2 quick and 1/2 old fashioned, better texture)
2 TBspoons extract (1/2 tsp vanilla, 1/2 tsp maple, 1/2 tsp almond,
1/2 tsp immitation butter) *if you are allergic to nuts, omit almond and add orange if you'd like*
1/2 C. water
1 cup sugar *Or use alternate below*
*If you'd rather use honey vs. sugar, play with the recipe a little bit by reducing the water to 1/4 cup and add 1/4 c. honey and see how moist it is, adding honey as needed 1 Tbspoon at a time* You dont want it too moist or it wont cook out.*
I just mix it all together (minus the chips) and put it in little clumps on a cookie sheet and bake it SLOWLY in the oven on 275for a few hours to let it all dry out. You can play with it, just dont get everything too wet, but just enough to stick together.
** you can add cinnamon, carob chips or anything else you'd like depending on what YOUR tastes are and what you can / cannot tolerate and what type of granola you want.
Add any dried or other fruits (like raisins), and carob chips, after granola is cooled***
Its very very good and low in fat. It will store for about 10 days or so in an air tight container. I add dried fruit to mine (that I can tolerate) and nuts as well (I know you cant have them, but some can) and its very very good.
Hugs,

What ingredients to avoid?
I was just diagnosed with IC a month ago so I am very new to this. I am having trouble finding anything that I can eat that has much taste. When I am shopping what ingredients should I be avoiding? There are so many names for sugar and other things I don't know if its preservatives or just a long name for sugar or something else that might be ok.
Can anyone let me know what words to avoid while I'm looking for food?
Please help!! Thanks

If you look under diet on the web site it will give you a list of things to eat and things not to eat. There are some foods that you still might have flares with. If you are not sure what food it is elemenate a food for a while and then try it again. There are some foods that one of us might be able to eat that is on the bad list and others kind. Hope this isn't more confusing to you.
Hang in there and you will find what works for you. It drives us all crazy at times.

Thanks for the recipe! I may just try making it that way, and carrying it with me in a baggie instead of a bar. I'll look at the Special K bar ingredients, also.
Thank you!
