Michael Moore-Sicko
Went to the new MM movie today Sicko. I am not always a big fan, but I must say he sure made some points that a lot of us who have ever dealt with insurance companies can relate too.
The film is not about the uninsured, but those who have insurance and how the IC try to bilk people out of paying for legitimate costs even when it costs the death of the person. Unlike some of his movies, this one takes aim at both political parties as they are both equally responsible for taking pay offs from the insurance lobby.
Movie left me with some points to think about.
Sammi
Meds: Melatonin 3mg @ bedtime if needed. Estrogen 1.5 mg troche and 0.1 mg Estrace cream.
Diagnosis: IC, PFD (both in remission)

You can get it online if your bladder can't allow you to see it at a theatre. I saw it last week in the comfort of my home.

*Diagnosed with severe IC in 2004
*Also diagnosed with PFD, fibromyalgia, chronic myofascial pain, IBS, migraines, allergies/asthma, dermatographism
*Kept trying a million different treatments for all these things until I found what works, and I am doing okay these days with the help of a cocktail of medications and the InterStim, which was first placed in 2007. [I have had 2 revisions - one in 2010 when my battery died and had to be replaced, and one complete replacement (lead and generator) in 2012 after a fall on my stairs caused my lead to move.]
*Current meds include Atarax (50mg at night), Lyrica (150mg twice a day), Xanax (0.5mg at night and as needed), Zanaflex (4mg at night), hydrocodone (10/325, every 6 hours as needed), Advair, Nasonex, Singulair (10mg at night), oral contraceptives, home instills containing Elmiron and Marcaine (as often as I need to do them).

Michael Moore was on Larry King this week to speak about his movie, and they are replaying the interview on CNN. I would like to go see it, although, I have heard some if it isn't totally factual. Michael Moore always has some good points to express though.
I am going to check to see how long it is. I hate to wait until it comes to rental.

I have been wanting to see that, I heard some good reviews from another IC patient. I think I'll have to wait till it comes out on video, though...his documentaries tend to be long and I don't think I could sit in a theatre that long. My hubby and I have had to walk out on movies before just for the fact that I couldn't sit through it!
And we have dial-up, so downloading it from the 'net would probably take longer than if we were to wait to rent it LOL.Mommy to 2 crazy, wonderful kids and wife to the most amazing man in the world!

From what little I have seen of SiCKO so far (in previews) this is typical Michael Moore, twisting facts to propel his own political agenda. He is in favor socializing medicine. That's pretty much what it comes down to. He doesn't think anyone in medicine should be making a profit, especially insurance companies. I'm not surprised he can find horror stories of people being wrongly denied claims but I just don't see how this could lead a person (or country) to favor a system that rejects companies from earning a profit. Without the incentive for profit medical research companies would not be spending millions exploring new medicines for treatments for our very own IC or Cancer, HIV, heart disease, etc. Without my insurance company I would be shelling out $1500 a month to pay for my prescriptions alone. Instead, I spend about $150-200 (which is hard enough). I wouldn't be able to afford $1500 a month. I'd just have to suffer if it weren't for my insurance coverage. I'm thankful to have it despite the fact that it can be very costly and a royal pain in the *** at times.
Michael Moore thinks the government should be in charge of healthcare and that no one should have to pay a single cent for anything when they need care. He thinks medical issues should be like our public school system---free to everyone and paid for by taxes. That's what I heard him say on Oprah a few weeks ago.
I just can't see why anyone would favor a system like this.
I admit that our current system could use some work but I just think turning it over to the government is the worst possible solution.Lee Ann
Current Rx Meds:
Atarax, Ditropan, Elmiron
Prior to pregnancy: The above 3 meds PLUS Neurontin, Topamax, Loratadine, continuous OrthoCyclen, Lidocaine Patches PRN, Temazepam PRN, & Vicodin PRN
Hooray for babies!
Misc. lifesavers: Hot baths, ThermaCare Heat Wraps, Ice Packs. The IC Diet has changed my life.
Didn't work for me:
Detrol LA, Amitryptiline, Morphine, Percocet, TENS unit, Interferential Pain Stimulator Unit, Hypogastric Plexus Nerve Block
IC (Mod-Severe) since 1996
UPDATE: 5/21/08 Pregnancy and breastfeeding afterwards have alleviated my IC symptoms more than anything, EVER. Most days are 100% pain free & I now have normal frequency (as long as I take these 3 meds).

I don't want to start a debate, but I do want to say that those of us who can work and have health insurance are very lucky. Please think about the millions of americans who are not offered affordable health care through their employers. My husband is lucky, I work at a place that offers great insurance. His employer...offers zilch. That's right, NO health insurance plan at all. That means that the rest of his colleagues, unless they are married or have a partner, have NO health insurance because I can guarantee you that they can't afford it.
While I don't believe in MM's glowing reviews of universal healthcare (I've seen and heard the downsides as well), I do think something needs to be done to the system to offer affordable insurance to all and NOT have it be tied to employment.Last edited by mom_in_ma; 07-01-2007 at 02:34 PM.

PS. It also terrifies me that insurance is tied to employment. What if I get to a point where I can't work? We're in deep dookie then!

You know what's great about Michael Moore? If you agree with him or not.....he brings all of these problems to the forefront and puts the spotlight on them and those causing them! Hopefully one day we won't have to worry about it cause we'll all be covered! Roxie

Yeah I definitely agree that everyone should be able to purchase affordable insurance. I am lucky enough to work but honestly my doctor has told me I would qualify for disability benefits and I have already earned all of the credits to collect the full amount. The problem is that I owe so much $$$ in student loans that I just can't do that. I'm trapped in my own way. I do make a good salary as a therapist, especially for a woman, but my parents didn't pay for my degrees. I'm thankful that right now I'm able to work. There are days and nights I don't think I can do it. I have gone weeks at a time with almost no sleep at all because of IC. It's not like I have it easy.
And I still can't help but think that people can get a job at a place that does offer insurance. I could be out there making at killing as a therapist if I were in private practice----but I have IC----and that's considered a pre-existing condition for which I can never get coverage for even if I am paying premiums----unless I work for a company with benefits. So it's a choice I have to make.Lee Ann
