Question about Cipro
I don't know if anyone can help me but I just finished taking my last Cipro pill for a UTI that I still have. I've noticed that I'm not urinating as much and can hold a lot more (unless I lay down and put pressure on my abdomen). I also notice that when I do have to go, not much comes out. Is Cipro supposed to do this? I don't know if it's the antibiotic working or if the UTI that is not clearing up. Still have burning if I drink to much and urinate too much. Will now be on Macrodantin (50 mg. 1x per da) for one month. Thanks for your help.

could you have yeast? You have retention....which can come from your muscles being overly tight which can happen after you have an infection. It may have nothing to do with Cipro. Does a bath help at all? The burning could also be because of muscle tightness.
When you have IC even after the infection has cleared up your bladder may not have recovered.
I hope you feel better soon!!!!
Did you have a post Cipro culture done?Faith, Hope, and Love,

Hi Katrina
Thanks for your reply Katrina -
Maybe I do have tightness. I have been doing those Kegel exercises. I have not taken a bath because I read that with a UTI, it's better to take showers. I am going Monday for a Cipro Culture. If that culture comes back positive, they will take me off the preventative Macrodantin and put me on something stronger. UGH!!! More antibiotics!! Don't know how I feel anymore or what's normal. Still have incontinence. It's mostly after urinating that more leaks out. I think I may have weakened the pelvic muscles from all that's going on. Thanks again for your help. Sandy

Katrina - Re: Yeast
I don't think I have yeast. The culture from my gyno was negative but that was before all these antibiotics. No itching or visible yeast. I did get a perscription for Diflucan just incase but have not taken it since I did not feel yeast. Do you think I should take it now that I finished the Cipro?
Have a good evening.

If you're prone to yeast infections, I think I would take it. When we take antibiotics, they can kill off the "good" bacteria, along with the bad stuff, which allows something like yeast to march in and take over.

Cipro wipes out my all my bacteria and I always get yeast after cipro (or any kind of antibiotic). Take probiotics just in case!

Normally for me yeast causes me burning, increased urination before any visable yeast or itching....and with Cipro it is a lot more likely you have some.
Kegals are really not normally very good for PFD. NOrmally we want to relax those pevlic muscles!! Granted if you have incontinence you may need some strengthening but do be careful!

I know how you feel...things are complex.....avoid UTI and yeast by not bathing....recommended PFD treatment...two baths a day. Too much going on in the body at once what do you ????
I feel for you....I know those feelings well

Ok - Now I've finished the Cipro and have retention. Hardly going at all and when I do it's like nothing comes out. Still having burning and I'm drinking lots of water. Still also have dripping after urinating. I'm a mess. Don't know what to do but have to go for urine culture again tomorrow. What if I can't pee???? UGH!!! I hate this!!!!!!!!!!!

If you cant pee Sandra, you would have to go to the nearest GP or ER if it's late and get cathered. That is dangerous to have retention.
Another thing I want to know is, are you straining to pee cuz it does sound abit like that....
I remember when I first got a UTI (when my symptoms started in 2002) and for weeks after that I used to strain and strain because I felt like I did not empty by bladder well and because of that and UTI, my bladder was so painful and I peed blood from straining the muscles so much (went every few minutes to the restroom). And had to be in bed for two weeks hardly able to move or sleep. You need to ignore that urge to strain and just think you will just have to come back after abit to pee again. That decreases bladder pain after awhile.
Don't do Kegel with infection!!!! I did that, I could hold really high amounts of pee (500ml) but its not good to hold pee in when you have an infection!!! That also doesn't do any good for the muscles that are already hurting right now, your just overworking the muscles in my opinion.
I'm sorry about what your going through though. Get more prescription and testing.

Thanks Vamp
Thanks for your response Vamp. I know I still have this infection and I pray that bacteria does show up in the culture tomorrow but as you said, it may not although the quick test in the office still showed white blood cells. I'm burning now and when I pee it's very little. I'm wondering why the Cipro did not work. Also, you are right. I should not have done the Kegel exercises with the infection but the Bozo nurse did not tell me that and she gave me the instruction sheet to do them. I probably made matters worse although who even knows. I just want it to go away and especially this incontinence. After I pee and wipe, as soon as I get up or put any pressure on my abdomen, more pee comes out. Can an infection really do this???? UGH!! On vacation tomorrow. Don't even want to go now. I won't hear back from the culture until Wed or Thurs. probably which means more days with this infection. I have no vehicle right now to get to the ER....................... Thanks again.

Infection can certainly weaken your bladder muscles and like Plain said cause leakage and retention. It's scary.
I was kind of surprised you wanted to go on your trip because of how your feeling honestly, even though I'm not leaking or having retention, I don't travel long unless I know I won't be in much pain and know how long I'm going to last. If this trip is really important then make you got hospitals nearby or clinics atleast and restrooms available and some pain medication like pyridium that also helps with burning.
But if its not important, I would concentrate more on my health.
Some nurses and pharmacist don't know nothing, ask me to drink cranberry juice and do kegel exercise, was really not fun experiencing so much pain.
You know how this board is so careful about giving advices since we're not train professional or expertise in the medical field. I just wonder how these people like nurses/pharmacist/doctors tell you to do something and how they ignore certain details and they get away with it, simply because of their background in medical field. It's crazy and dumb. Cuz if a patient tells another we get in trouble but if a doctor says go off something helping you or say yeah go ahead eat what you want and it should NOT effect IC and you did it. Then it's ok.
Think quite a number of people put a whole lotta trust in doctors and their instincts, which sometimes are so wrong and WE pay NOT them. And it makes me sick.
Seeing your first post just reminded me of that, like what antibiotics to take? And theres so many and without a culture you can't tell which will work for you. But when I had started my symptoms and saw the doctor, she did not do a sensitivity test just a dipstick and told me theres infection and gave me amoxycillin antibiotics. Amoxycillin is so widely prescribed here for colds and for acne and etc. Furthermore my E.coli and Klebseilla just are resistant to Amoxycillin, I'm guessing here but I think all my negative type bacterias are just resistant to Amoxycilin because of the amount of usage and how easily it's given.
Can you take a cab to the ER? Or have someone drive you incase?
There has got to be ambluance service as well, see when you go into retention you would need that kinda attention and immed. So I would look around for service like this just in case.
