Hi,
I have had two nerve blocks in the back to try to stop my ic pain the first one lasted a week the second for 15-17 days I was unwilling to try a third. they do use diff. types of nerve blocks. I would talk to your uro and ask him does he think this will help you in your case. I was like you willing to try anything to relive the pain. I fially found something that helps me alot but they didnt in the pass I use the dmso treatments at home one to three times a day. Good Luck and please let keep me updated on what you decide to do. I had a series of 4 Spinal Stellate Gannglion Nerve Blocks in November, they did one each week for 4 weeks and my life has changed immensly!
The blocks are expensive and run about $1,200- $1,400 dollars for one, but if you have good insurance that helps! ( I do not have good Ins 50%-50%!).
The nerve blocks are not painful, they insert a small catherter into your back after they have started an I.V. , then they sedate you with Versaid ( the best drug that is out there, it is an amnesiac, so you will not remember the installation). The whole procedure takes about 20 minutes then you are out the door after a 20 minute outpatient stay. If you have the hour and the $ it sure worked miricles for me.
The block is supposeed to target the nerves that send pain impulses and bring them to a halt, I went into the therapy not knowing what kind of outcome I would have, these blocks work really well for some and not so good for others, my Anesthesiologist has worked with several IC patients and has had improved pain and symptom releif, I beleive by his almost skeptical reaction he has helped me more than others, usually the blocks do not effect as strongly as they did for me, thank God though, it was my last option before considering cystectomy! (the Anesthesiologist who will be doing these blocks should have knowledge of IC and should have treated IC patients, ask, ask, and ask lot's of questions, your Urologist can get you in to see a Pain Management Anesthesiologist quite easily, these are busy Doc's and it took a 8 month wait to see mine!)

I had 'trigger point' injections done-the pain was gone for about an hour. Then I had an excrutiating flare that lasted two weeks. My gp gave me a prescription for Fentynl transdermal patches (I have tried everything with no luck-I have had pain everyday for one year!) I put a patch on yesterday and hadn't had any pain except tonight I had a bit on 'break through' pain-which is normal until your body adjusts to the medication. Good luck!

I have had 3 nerve blocks. One this summer called a hypogastric plexus, which refers to the pelvic region seemed to work. I just had it done again 1 mon. ago and it worked for about 2 days and then I woke up in extreme pain. He did another block the next week of the nerves that control just above the lower abdominal. I noticed nothing. I was so disapointed. It was a very easy procedure and didn't involve any pain. I went in early was put under for 20 min. woke up waited 20 min. and went home. By the afternoon I was making my mom lunch. It was worth the try and since my insurance covered most of it I didn't lose too much ($80 dollars each time.) I think you should talk to your dr. about that option. I wrote down the type of nerve block that Jessica described so I can ask my pain dr. about it when I see him tomorrow.

I WENT IN FOR A NERVE BLOCK FOR MY LOW BACK PAIN AND THEY GAVE ME A EPIDURE AND I WAS AMAZED THAT MY IC WENT AWAY FOR AWHILE. I ALREADY HAD 2 MORE NERVE BLOCK AND I CAN SEE A DIFFERENCE. I GO IN FOR MY THIRD SHOT NEXT WEEK. THEY WENT IN MY L 4 $ 5 IT SURE MADE A DIFFERENCE TO ME. I FEEL SO MUCH BETTER. STILL HAVE TO TAKE PAIN MEDS BUT NOT AS MANY.
