Urethral/Vaginal burning discomfort
Hi all. I am hoping to get a little advice. Currently I am on Atarax and just started Detrol for IC. I do not have urgency or frequency too often. I go about 8 or 9 times a day and never during the night. However I am baffled by the one symptom I do have. After I urinate when I stand up I get this rush of urethral/vaginal discomfort. It's not a severe burning just really freaking uncomfortable! It can stick with me anywhere from minutes to hours. I am really getting worried that there is nothing I can take for this. Does anyone have advice??? I took pyridium for pain after the scope but I don't have pain during urination. I am hoping Atarax and Detrol together might help. I get depressed every time these feelings come back. Any advice? I am getting discouraged about this condition.
Diagnosed with IC: April 7, 2006
Meds: Atarax and Detrol

Trying to stay positive

Hi Dawn, I have had IC for 4 years, I also have "burning" post void sometimes, and definitly after my hydrodistentions. I have tried cool compresses, and my doc gave me Lidocaine gel, I have also used Aloe Vera gel that can be kept in the fridge so it is really cold. Ask your doc for the Lidocaine gel. unless you are allergic to lidocaine or novacaine.....LL215....good luck.

That's my primary symptom these days. There are some things that help.
Make sure you're drinking enough water throughout the day so that your urine is dilute enough and reduces irritation to the tissues.
Try using a squirt bottle filled with cool water that you use to squirt the water over your vaginal/urethral area while you urinate. It is cooling, soothing and keeps the urine from staying on the tissues too long.
Take calcium supplements, which can reduce the oxalates in urine which contribute to burning and irritation.
You may want to talk to your doctor about trying a low dose of tricyclic antidepressants (Elavil is one, but there are others.) If what you're experiencing is referred pain, tricyclic antidepressants can help block the nerve pain sensation.
Finally, check your diet. Some foods can cause the pain you're describing. The other day I tried a new alfredo sauce with my pasta and veggies, and later that night I experienced horrible pain and burning after I urinated. It's the only thing I can pinpoint as a cause, and usually if something I've ingested bothers me, I'll feel it right after I'm done urinating, not during.
Good luck. I know it's frustrating but there are ways of minimizing the pain and burning. It just takes some experimentation.

I had complained about this to my urologist but he said there wasn't anything else to prescribe me. I talked to my primary care doctor and he gave me Mycolog cream which contains steriods. I get the irritated feeling around the urethra.

Hmm I hate when doctors wash their hands off you and just say they can't prescribe you anything or help you anymore....

Can you see another doctor? Did you get him to test you for infection? Change your medication?....

I would check for infection first, If it ISN'T...
Have you tried cornsilk without grape alcohol. It used to work wonders on me. I used the tincture type...put it right under my tongue (taste gross) then sucked down a glass of water. Just beware this may increase your urine flow...although it NEVER did with me. Might be worth a shot. Are you drinking enough water to dilute your urine? I drank (still do) upwards of just about a gallon a day.
Good luck...let us know.Minds are like parachutes-they ony function when they are open.

Do you still take it? Where can I get it? What can you say gave you remission from your symptoms and what were your symptoms previously?

NO, I don't still take it because I have not needed it. I got mine at a health food store.
What gave me relief from my symtoms was the IC diet (followed it STRICTLY)Elmiron, Atarax, Colostrum, Marshmallowroot tea, and the HYDRO'S.
I don't currently have any symptoms. I believe I am controlling the IC with the diet. I never go crazy and say "hey I'm in remission, I can eat and do what ever I want" That's just SILLY. I know it's a REMISSION. How long it's going to last is how long I am nice to my bladder. I do stray off the diet and I'm finding some things I can tolerate like coffee, whhich is nice. Coffee was the hardest thing for me to give up.
I basically live a normal life, somethings have to alterated, but considering I was a pain patients 24/7, I think I am doing pretty damn good.
As far as "getting a new liner" I believe what my URO meant by that was that my liner looked a whole better than it did when I first started seeing her. My first URO screwed me up with the DMSO.
I am one of the lucky ones who does not have rips or tears out side the lining and I do not have hunner's. My case was (is) considered mild to moderate.
I had pin point holes in my bladder and alot of my pain was coming from the nerves surrounding the bladder and I think (my opinion ONLY) that the hydro's fixed that and made me feel better. They were very thereputic to me.
I just hogged who ever started this thread...I am so sorry.
I hope this answers your question.

hoping4acure - Whats colostrum for?
About the IC diet, I'm one of those people when I start to feel alittle better I stray off and start eating what I should not....blah. It's just so hard because I really got nothing much helping me. Just antibiotics and baking soda in water that's all....So yeah...
I'm glad the hydro's helped you!!! I'm not sure what kind of bladder I have, you know pinpoint bleeding or ulcer or whatever, I should ask my doctor the next time I see her. So you mean overstretching your bladder healed the pinpoint bleeding?
I wanna drink tea!!! but it seems like theres alots of decaf coffee not tea...grrrr
For someone whose 24/7 pain patient and to know where you are now, that is really AWESOME!!!

I am feeling the burning again and I'm not sure why, maybe it could have been the spicy food I ate, but my antibiotics helped with that or maybe not...blah...

spicy food always made (still makes) my bladder burn. I stay away from it. I still can't have black pepper, not even a little.
colostrum helped boost my immune system, and again, a gentle cleanser. colostrum is "mothers first milk" in this case, it is bovine colostrum. If you google it...there is more information there.
I don't know if overstretching the bladder healed the pinpoint bleeding? I know she said the 2nd time she did the hydro I "bled out" really bad. That was my worse hydro of the 4 I was peeing blood clots, and I was retaining urine really bad (very painful.) On the 4th one she said I hardly had any bleeding when she went in. I never asked for pictures. I suppose I could call the hospital and ask them (she RETIRED last year
