Quick question about UTIs
I have one right now
With my IC, and I always terrified of getting an infection. Dh and I were just getting back into a normal sex routine as I was slowing getting over the idea that sex causes UTIs. Well, I'm pondering how I got my current one. The night before my first symptoms I groomed "down there". Of course I had to use soap to later and shave. I'm thinking this may have gave me my infection. Thoughts? Ick, now I'm going to be afraid to shave!!
Diagnosed with IC in 2004 at the age of 19
12 weeks of instillations (don't remember what)
Remission from late 2005 until August 2011.
Married in 2005 - Our son was born in 2008!
IC acting back up after a severe UTI in June followed by another mild UTI in August.
Current Treatment
~IC diet - not strict, but avoiding most things including my beloved soy chai lattes. Drinking only water and blueberry juice. No tomatoes or anything spicey.
~1/2-1mg Ativan per day - has been the only thing to help! Praying that my doctor will let me continue with it
~25mg Doxipen
~Azo as needed (don't really notice a difference)
IC symptoms get progressively worse throughout the day. Sleep and constant distraction are my only refuge!

It might be the soap. I use cetaphil in bar form (not the antibacterial) and it has worked great. Are you having instills? Instills can cause a higher degree of UTI's. Unfortunately sex can as well. You can help things about by washing down there first, make sure your dh has clean hands, voiding after intercourse, even washing after intercourse...sometimes docs prescribe one antibiotic to take before intercourse. I'm flaring so bad right now that I'm not going to put anything down there that doesn't belong to me! LOL

Gosh, that's a tough one to ask. I tend to lean towards the soap or something related to that. Have you all thought of condoms? They're great for prevention of whatever might happen, in terms of infections. Hope your doc can give you some insights, as I'm sure you'll want to bring that up with him/her.
In Search Of Normal
IC (Feb 2001):
Pain:
OxyContin (started 9/06) (dosage still being determined, but working up to 3 tablets (10 mg) twice per day, for a total of 6)
Effexor (150 mg/day; I was at 200 mg per day but backed off due to side effects; this has helped reduce pain a little but enough to improve my life)
Robaxin (muscle relaxant, started 2/24/06; only as needed rarely for when muscles get tight due to pain)
Elmiron (300 mg/day)
Ulcerative colitis (Dec 2002, mild):
Asacol (6/day)
Senna Plus for constipation
Depression:
Prozac (40 mg day)
Previously tried but didn't work:
Elavil (worked well for pain but could not take urinary retention side effect)
Pamelor (same as Elavil)
Flomax (took when I was on Pamelor)
Tylenol 3 (has codeine; I changed to Vicodin which worked better and did not cause constipation)
