    Provera

I recently got an pelvic ultrasound and it showed a small fibroid in my uterus and a cyst on my ovary.....my obgyn gave me provera to take for 10 days mid cycle.....I went and got a second opinion and she said since it is not causing any symptoms that we should just leave it be for now......I read up on Provera and it is the progesterone hormone......Does anyone know why he would give me that for a fibroid and a cyst......I've read up about hormones and IC and it doesnt sound like a good mix....any input is appreciated...

I may have my memory skewed, but here goes.

I was put on Provera many (eek) years ago after a failed IUD, and subsequent heavy bleeding. Unless I am mistaken is this not to curb the bleeding? If he is looking at the U/S and assuming it may cause bleeding and using it prophalactically, that is my only guess...

...of course, now in reverse order I am going to look up Provera to see if I am remembering it's reason for Rx correctly. And at least 30+ years later, there may be cross over prescribing indicators for the drug.

I always say, when in doubt, make the call. Ask to speak to the prescribing Dr, by return phone call and voice your concerns as well as your confusion., It is your right as a patient.

    Provera

You are correct Betsie. Progesterone or progestins are used to try to regulate the bleeding. Provera would not be my progestin of choice as it has a very bad history.
Progesterones are from many different families: Provera is strictly man made and synthetic. Ageystin is from the testosterone family and a very good progestin without the side effects, Prometrium is made from yams and is considered the only natural bio identical progesterone on the market and is the progesterone of choice for many excellent doctors.
Sometimes progesterone does not control fibroid bleeding and then you have to consider a endometrial oblation or hysto if its really bad.

Progesterone and in particular Provera can also cause UT symptoms to be worse.
