    Marshamallow Root

Has anyone had any success with Marshamallow Root Tea, have heard good things about it but not sure if it is worth trying? Also heard it is high in sugar?

I take powdered marshmallow root every day. By itself it didn't help much, but as a part of my current regimen it definetly does. I don't know much about it being high in sugar. If so, I would think not more that a spoonful of sugar in tea! It is safe for babies and elderly, so unless you had a pre-existing condition that made you worry about it, I wouldn't worry about it. You can always research it or ask a naturopath if you have questions.
30 year old Mother, Midwife, Birth Doula, Herbalist, and Massage Therapist with sudden onset of IC approx. 2/16/05 (after a PAP smear and routine gynecological exam). I tried a HUGE list of natural and alternative treatments (including Cystoprotek, Desert Harvest Aloe, Aloe gel, Glucosamine/Chondroitin, L-Argenine, Quercitin/Bromelain, Marshmallow Root...etc) for the first 9 months of having IC, without much relief, until I finally researched and started Elmiron.

    My experience:
~Previously took Elmiron 100mg three times a day
    (9/29/05-7/06)
~Experimented with dosage (1-2 Elmiron a day recapped into a plain gelcap) and did well with occasional mild flares. (7/06-9/09)
~Stopped all together at the 1 year mark (9/29/06) for 10 days. Still felt good, with low-level symptoms.
~Decided to go back on it (10/16/06) to see if another year on it will bring me into full (zero symptoms) remission. Currently taking 1-2 pills a day, recapped into a plain gelcap.
~ 6/08...Tried to go off Elmiron again, had huge flare at the 3 week mark, went back on 100mg once a day for maintenance.
-I went off Elmiron for 2 months due to pregnancy and had a complete relapse of IC symptoms to pre-diagnosis levels of pain/frequency. I then went back on Elmiron at 10-12 weeks, but was unable to take it further due to severe morning sickness. The 2nd/3rd trimesters were MUCH better IC-wise, and postpartum is the best I have felt in years. I am no longer on Elmiron for now.
-20 month postpartum remission from 4/17/09 to 12/10/10.
-Out of remission after a pap smear on 12/10/10. Pap smears are obviously the main IC trigger for me. Currently trying to cope with loss of the remission.

    Also doing:
~Sugar-free/gluten free and strict IC diet (With an emphasis on organic, alkaline and whole foods)
    ~Prenatal DHA/Fish oil supplement
    ~Vitamin D supplement
    ~Culturelle probiotic

    Shannydu,

marshmallow root (tea) was one of the things I took to help me into remission. I bought mine in bulk over the internet. It does not have sugar in it. It looks like tea leaves. I put it into a tea ball and steeped it. It gently cleanses your system of impurity's. It also puts the "force" behind your stream. I took in very low doses through out the day.

I think it is worth a shot again, don't try to much at once or you will get a wicked "stinging" feeling in your urine. I found that out by trial and error.

Good luck and let me know how you made out.

    Marshmellow Root Capsules

I take Marshmallow root capsules by Soloray, 3 twice a day. It really helps with burning urethra, pressure and symptoms in general. It seems to make the urine "soft" or "slippery" and I would not be without it.
I also take Algonot 6 a day, calcium citrate 6 a day, Noahs water.

The only precaution I know of is if you are already taking a diuretic. I take a diuretic for high blood pressure so marshmallow root tea is out for me.

One thing I think is important to share is the drug interaction! That doesn't mean you can't take it with other meds but that you may want to take it at a different time.

    Marshmallow Root:

It is believed that marshmallow root tea provides a soothing coating to the bladder because of the mucilage found in the plant.

    Scientific Name: Althaea officinalis
    Approved by Commission E: Yes
Description: The medicinal parts of the plant are mallow flowers, leaves, syrups and roots. However, the herbal supplement is made from the dried root and the dried leaves.
Actions & Pharmacology: Marshmallow root relieves local irritation, inhibits mucocilary activity, functions as an anti-inflammatory, good for bladder infections and is an immune stimulant.
General Precautions:There are no general precautions or side effects if the drug is used as per manufactures labeling on required dosages.
Drug Interactions: If other drugs are taken simultaneously the absorption of the other drugs may be delayed.
How Supplied: Marshmallow root can be purchased in capsules, tablets (coated and uncoated), as an extract, as a tea and in powder form.

    Marshmallow capsules

I have never noticed a diuretic effect from marshmallow caps. My book on herbs for the urinary tract also does not list it as a diuretic but as a mucigen or a coating similar to slippery elm.

I have many herb books and it isn't always listed as a diuretic but in the most detailed ones it is. I think with IC the more we know the better since many have multiple illnesses and other problems and react to a lot of things.

As far as taking it with other meds, I always take my marshmallow root 3 hours before or after any other meds or suppliments so the marshmallow does not interfere with absorbtion of them.

Someone recommended an internet site zooscape.com to purchase marshmallow root in teabags and a combo of marshmallow/camomile in teabags. It's effect isn't miraculous, but is helpful in the overall regime.

I bought the Marshmallow root tincture and was putting it in tea everyday. I had a reaction that was wierd. A burning tingling all around my mid-section from my sides to my belly. I thought I was developing shingles. As soon as I stopped the marshmallow root, it went away. Maybe i was using too much, dunno.

I may try the MM root with camomile tea and see if it's a better mix. Sounds like it has helped many people. I'll try anything.

marmallow root teat will do that to you if you take to much. I used very little, and through out the day.

Question How much do you use?

    Hi Louann and others,

How much of the leaves did you use when making the tea? I know everyone is different but do you have an amount you would recommend to start with?

I actually bought the capsules. Does anyone know how to make tea from them?

Its so hard to figure out a good routine.

I feel like this could be really helpful for me though.

    Thanks Guys!

I use very very little when I make it from the leaves. A starter point might be to figure 1 tablespoon per 12 cup coffee pot. I use a 2 cup coffee pot and literally put a "twig" in there, very little. I am still trying to learn how much is right but that is where I am right now.
