    White Bread Question

Hi I am not diagnosed with IC yet, but trying the diet to see if that helps my bladder pain. I just read the Patient Handbook and looked at the lists of foods. I have been eating white bread and butter for the last few days thinking that was okay and then discovered that the not okay list says no pread with preservatives. THe bread label I have been eating lists ascorbic acid in it, so I'm not supposed to have it then right? What kind of bread can I eat, I have five small children I cannot be making homemade bread every few days. Also wondering about licorice, it is my favorite candy (red not black) it was listed on the okay side, but it seems to good to be true. Can you really eat red licorice? My other two favorites are french fries, and popcorn are they okay, I am thinking yes as long as they don't have seasoning other than salt and butter.

haha too funny. i've been wondering the same things. i've had a bag of twizzlers sitting on my desk for the past week that i've been debating trying and I had been living off bagels and toast but when I looked at the list i worried the same things. i was doing fairly well today until i ate a turkey sandwhich - just turkey, american cheese and white bread and now i'm feeling a lil worse. i'd be glad to hear anyone's responses to dessica's questions.

I do okay with plain white bread, but I do read labels in case they sneak something strange in. Some ICers can't tolerate turkey, but I'm okay with it. Chicken seems to be okay with nearly every ICer I've had contact with.

I don't like red licorice so I don't know about that one.

I do ok with many white breads but am very careful about reading labels. I usually stick to fresh bakery breads that do not have added preservatives (very irritating for me) or soy flour (very acidic). We are all a little different in our sensitivities and tolerances and it takes awhile to go through the process of discovering what your personal triggers might be.

A few people are sensitive to turkey and others of us are ok with it. I am very careful about avoiding turkey that has been smoked or has any additives.

I haven't tried red licorice as I am sensitive to red and yellow dyes so I can't give any advice on that.

I know it is hard in the beginning to learn the diet and find what does and does not work for you. The best advice I can give is to read all labels very carefully. When I first began the diet, I found carrying a copy of the diet with me helped tremendously when shopping.

    Unhappy

Yeah that's what I did, but I'm so confused when it comes to all this preservative and soy stuff etc. That I end up walking out with brown minute rice and bottled water. I feel like when I try anything else I have a bad day. My mom yells at me, because I keep losing weight and she doesn't think the diet is as big of a deal as I'm making it.

haha so i pretty much screw up the diet even when trying my hardest to be good. the turkey was lunch meat. the bread was some regular ol stuff from the grocery store and i chewed gum yesterday that might not have helped. i was doing 'ok' before all this mind you. oh well. so glad to hear about the twizzlers tho!

Several ICers have posted that gum is a problem for them.

I also do fine with white bread, but I stick to the same kind. Trying to find what bothers your bladder and what does not sucks, but in the long run you will be happy you did.

If you have a Trader Joe's, Whole Foods or Fresh Market near you, those are usually good sources for preservative-free breads. I get 2 loaves at a time & freeze one. (Without preservatives, they tend to go stale a little fast). I also make muffins frequently & freeze those. They're less work to make than bread.

About your specific question. If I eat out, I always take Prelief to cover the small amount of acids there might be in commercial breads. I also cannot tolerate American Cheese without Prelief. Many brands of lunch meat turkey, I cannot tolerate, so I get phosphate- & nitrite- free turkey at Whole Foods or I get the "dinner roast" turkey at the Safeway deli counter. That one bothers me less than most. The safest lunch meat for me is boneless chicken I cook at home on the George Foreman grill with a little dried sage, thyme, garlic & salt.

I get Prelief special order at Costco for $7.77 a bottle of 120 tablets. (At Walgreens it's $11.99 for the same size bottle).

Hope you find things that work for you soon!

Oh! French fries & popcorn are usually okay for me. I usually ask restaurant staff for plain french fries with no seasoning & add salt at the table. I do get an organic microwave bag popcorn & add my own butter & salt.

    Enjoy!

It is really safe to make your own bread in breadmashine.
You can make everything from your own dough too.
    I wish you the best!

What about the sugar in red twizzlers? I love them too but just learned that sugar is like "pioson" for us.
